His Lips Are Moving

One of the saddest things about the political season (which, like the Christmas decorations in the stores, seems to get longer and longer with each passing cycle of national elections) is that there is simply nowhere to run and escape political ads. Now, if you even casually watch those ads, there's one really telling constant in these ads: all of the "pro" ads (as in, "vote for me," not "my opponent is a dirt bag" negative ads) generally show the politician talking to "regular folks," which is supposed to show, I suppose, that he/she is "in touch" with the "common people." But there's one problem with these ads. All of the ads I have seen show these politicians doing nothing but talking. They are never shown LISTENING to their potential constituents. And that's pretty typical of politicians: all talk. Or, as the old joke says, "How do you know if a politician is lying? His lips are moving." Here's the classic Randy Newman politician song:

You're right although I hadn't thought much about it before. It would be good to see a politician actually listening to a member of the public.

It's kind of interesting how Hillary Clinton got trashed by the right-wing media and other Republicans for going on what she called a "listening tour" when she first ran for the Senate. I think she did a similar thing early in both her Presidential campaigns. It's hard to believe there are so many who prefer listening to a loud mouth braggart go on and on for hours without putting a single coherent sentence together.

I am not into politics. You are right. They don't know how to listen and keeps on talking.

Good for Randy Newman doing this! It is just such a sad mess-and realize one of these people will actually win!

None of them listen. They just push their own agendas once they are in.

@FourWalls Heh, trust a third wave Baby-boomer to notice this, especially if they've been as involved in politics as you have. As proof of my youth, I didn't even know there was a joke about lying politicians. But that's very telling if the joke is as old as you and my dad. Very telling. It's sad how this furthers my suspicions that all politics care about is their own greed, because if they were for the people they'd listen to our needs, weigh the odds and devise a means to meet those needs as best they can given the circumstances. Plus it's in a leader's best interest to garner advice from their followers and subjects, because a leader can't lead if they think they have al the answers! That's exactly why our govrnment is set up the way it is, so that no sole individul makes all the hard choices. And yet all these politicians do is lie and manipulate to satisfy their greed and keep the world as the relic they knew growing up. Sad...

This is the way it is with all politicians. They'll all talk, but no action.
