Typhoon-proof wind turbines

I just read an article about a Japanese inventor who has come up with a wind turbine (to generate electricity) that is not the traditional fan-blade shape, but has three strong cylinders that rotate. It is supposed to be strong enough to not be broken by typhoons and strong straight winds. This Japanese man is working with a prototype for this on the island of Okinawa, where they have plenty of typhoons to test it.
I really hope it works. I think the world needs more ways of producing clean energy. What do you think of regular wind turbines and of new inventions like this?

@petatonicsca Exactly. If people can't learn to tune out a bit of a hum, I think they're being a bit short-sighted. Wind power has to be so much more beneficial than burning fossil fuels.

Seriously, if we can get energy from wind, sun and water, why should we be polluting our atmosphere?

That's a good invention. We really need it to cut on carbon emissions by using fossil fuels to generate electricity.

I see them sometimes out in the country (the big windmill kind.) But not in Tokyo.

Good, it would generate more energy during typhoons. Vertical turbines are generally stronger than their horizontal cousins.

I think it will be interesting to see if they get used. Your country and mine get enough typhoon energy that it should produce plenty of electricity.
