Yesterday, I taught a class for homeschoolers who are associated with our school. They can use our library, get suggestions for curriculum, and sometimes we host a special class. Yesterday was my turn. I had 10 homeschooled elementary students, mostly grades 3-6, and we did an hour about orchestral instruments. I was shocked to learn that most of them knew nothing about instruments, even at that age. (Two of them are taking violin, though.) The band director and strings teacher came in at the end and demonstrated instruments and let the children try getting a sound on them. They really enjoyed it. Two of them asked their mother if they can start taking instrumental lessons. One wants to play flute and the other wants to play cello. I guess it was a fruitful day!
What instruments are your favorites? Do you play anything or just enjoy listening? Both are important!

It is great to expose children to these types of experiences. One year, years ago, three of us went to several quite isolated small schools. Between us we had about a dozen instruments that we could demonstrate albeit sometimes in a quite elementary manner! :) But the kids didn't know the difference and really enjoyed being able to have a go on some of them.

Mine had the most fun trying to make their lips buzz for brass. We tried it all together using our fingers as a loop. They all laughed and laughed.

@petatonicsca I remember trying to get a buzz when I joined the brass band. On our trip, the kids loved the trumpet and trombone best - loud and brassy I guess. :)
