North Carolina received the worst of the flooding from Hurricane Matthew. One of the more interesting stories is how the the Civil Air Patrol assists in emergencies like these. It's an organization affiliated with the Air Force.
CAP units from Maryland, Florida and Tennessee have all come in to assist the local chapters in this massive disaster in North Carolina. My daughter, Shelly, her husband Michael and their daughter Kyra are long time members of CAP and are currently assisting in the clean up.
They have been activated to UNC at Pembroke where their son actually goes to college and will be assisting the National Guard. They are still rescuing people from rooftops in that area.

They are called upon occasionally by the community for things like search and rescue as well, Emergencies need well trained people to volunteer.

@Jeanniemaries If I was in a predicament, I'd also prefer well trained people!

@DianneN My granddaughter was Cadet of the Year last year in her wing. She not only goes to weekly meetings but several training camps during the year. Their family is very service oriented.

It seems to be a little known organization but I often run into people who are aware of what they do. My granddaugter was Cadet of the Year last year in her wing.
