Fried Egg Sandwich On A Rainy Day

It’s raining again today so I decided I wanted a fried egg sandwich. I’ve written about fried egg sandwiches before. They are like Jekyll and Hyde. These are one of my favorite sandwiches–as long as the egg is hot. If the egg is cold, I can barely choke the sandwich down without upchucking.
If it’s an egg salad sandwich made with hard boiled eggs, those cold eggs do not bother me at all. Matter of fact, I have never eaten a hot egg salad sandwich. I don’t think I would like a hot egg salad sandwich. Just the thought of it almost makes me gag.
Making a fried egg sandwich always reminds me of my visits to my foster mother’s. Every time I would visit her she would ask if I wanted a fried egg sandwich. Of course I did. Then she would give me a glass of cold, fresh milk. She no longer ran the dairy farm but her son did so her milk was fresh from the milk cooler to her refrigerator. Then we would sit and talk while I enjoyed my fried egg sandwich.
Today I made my fried egg sandwich a bit different than she did back then. But don’t get me wrong, her fried egg sandwiches were good. I just dressed mine up a bit more.
What I did was put salt, pepper and garlic powder on my fried egg. My foster mother just sprinkle a bit of salt on the egg. I toasted my bread. Sometimes my foster mother did that and sometimes not. I put butter of one side of the sandwich and Miracle Whip on the other. (Yes, I know many of you out there don’t like Miracle Whip so no need to tell me about it. You can make the sandwich with mayonnaise–that doesn’t bother me in the slightest.) Today I put a slice of cheese on my sandwich, too. When I put cheese on my fried egg sandwich it goes on the Miracle Whip side so to not cover the butter. That way the hot egg can help melt the butter as well as the cheese.
As I ate my fried egg sandwich I thought about my visits to my foster mother’s. Sometimes she wanted me to take her to the local hamburger joint. It was owned locally. And the hamburgers were much better than what the the chain fast food restaurants offered.
I always enjoyed my visits. It got me out of the drab of the week. The drive there also wakened up my week. It was about a forty-five minute drive through the country to get to her house. I usually stayed a couple of hours so by the time I got back home I was in a really good mood.
Today I thought we needed something to put everyone in a good mood.

@RichardMeister My Mom could not hand out a sandwich without the old Whip on it when I was a kid. And sweet tomato soup and Velveeta sandwiches for lunch. Well, now I am more than ever determined to eat my vegetarian diet. My sentences here cemented me but good.

@sallypup I haven't had Velveeta in years. We did eat that when I was growing up. I have tomato soup every now and then. I don't buy anything other than the "old Whip."

I go to Costco once a month and buy their 5 dozen eggs package. It last me all month. Thank you for skipping your opinion on Miracle Whip. I believe our tastes for certain foods is developed on what we eat growing up. We always had Miracle Whip. I think back then it was cheaper than mayonnaise.
It's great you got so many eggs from your chickens.

What a great story. Thank know you for sharing. I loved fried egg sandwiches. I make them pretty much the way you do. They are so good.
Red Skelton...I remember watching him as a kid. What a class act! Brings back so many memories.

@Happy2BeMe I agree if it's fried egg. I can eat a cold hard boiled egg, though.

I actually don't mind cold or hot eggs . . . either way is fine with me. We have scrambled egg sandwiches . . . on the bread we put mayo and a touch of mustard . . . Hubby tends to do more to his cooking - he'd do the salt/pepper/garlic powder thing too - with any cheese we have on hand. I'll have to do the fried egg one - I love fried eggs!
It's funny there are certain foods from childhood that we carry with us the rest of our lives. When we went on outings, my mom used to pack up boiled eggs with a separate bag of salt . . . so that's what I do too (minus the salt).
Oh - Red Skelton! I always picture the "clown" in him . . . his clown artwork was so "him"!

@RichardMeister That reminds me of when we went on a family trip to San Francisco when I was 3. I don't remember the trip much - but I do remember when we stopped over on some dirt road where we could still see the Golden Gate Bridge. My dad pulled out his pocket knife and peeled an apple for me to eat. Hey, and I'm still alive too!
Hubby would never eat bologna. His mom packed him bologna sandwiches all his school life and now he HATES bologna for life!
You and your Miracle Whip
. I can't remember what that tastes like. My mom always used Best Foods mayo. I do have real mayo on hand, but mainly we use "Veganaise" - not because it's vegan - I forgot why we started using it. We like the taste of it anyway - best tasting mayo substitute anyway.

@much2say Yeah, still alive.
I rarely eat bologna anymore. I did when I've gone to the store and need to grab something fast for my lunch back when I was working. That was far and few between though.
I have never even heard of "Veganaise." I buy most my food from Costco if it's something I can freeze or will keep for a long time. Costco usually doesn't carry odd things so I'll have to look when I go to pick up items from a different store.

I have never tried a scrambled egg sandwich. Something I'll have to try someday.
I can remember going to pick huckleberries one time. We stopped at a little store on the way. My foster parents bought a loaf of bread, bologna, cheese and a small jar of Miracle Whip. When it came lunchtime my foster dad took out his pocket knife, wiped it off on his pants and spread the Miracle Whip on the bread then cut the cheese with the knife. Us kids all thought it was pretty cool. Rough, tough, and very woodsman-like. Nowadays they would probably lock an adult up for endangering children to all the germs on the knife and his pants. None of us got sick.

What a lovely memorable story, it just made me fry my own egg for breakfast
, I did it the Filipino way, placed on top of hot steaming hot rice, with salt and a slice of salami. There's an approaching strong super typhoon, signal 4 or 5 and it's very dark outside so it's one of those days I love to eat hot rice with egg.

Sounds good. I have put a couple of eggs in the frypan on low heat and cover the pan. Then after a few minutes I slide the eggs on my plate. I don't flip the eggs and cook both sides which is common to do here.

Funny how food can trigger memories like that. Anne came up with microwave version of an egg sandwich that I make about once a week.
