Siege of Istanbul

Sadly it seems that there is more conflict and fighting going on in Turkey today, and especially Istanbul. It has been almost two months since the Siege of Istanbul started. I have been very fortunate to visit the beautiful Istanbul twice on my travels and found the Turkish people to be polite and peaceful which makes me wonder WHY and WHO has corrupted the AIR to make life so war-torn unbearable for the people of Turkey? All traveling from SA to Turkey has been suspended due to the fighting. My prayers are with them - World Peace would be such a wonderful gift for mankind everyday . . .

What happens in Turkey ? Is it another attempt of "coup d'Etat" like in July ? I visited Turkey once, and it was a kind of adventure : I went from France in 1980, with my first car, an antic 2cv Citroen that I had bought about $400, the same than on this photo found on Wikipedia. The car was loaded like a mule and climbed the Alps at 20 km/h. I had a break failure in Bulgaria, and it has been fixed weirdly by a mechanic who told me that I should not wait to have a real repair. I sold the car 2 years later with 30 000 more kms and the Bulgarian "temporary" break fix for the same price that I had bought it.

@LadyDuck I was only 21. It crossed Europe like a charm, and I went to Cappadoce with it, near the Iraq border, without any problem. For the price paid for it, this 2cv was the best car that I ever had.

During my numerous visits to Turkey I found the very same thing, the people were very friendly. It was one of the factors that made Turkey such a popular destination for millions of tourists.

@Inlemay Yes, especially considering that it is the decent population there that will suffer. Maybe I should forget about Turkey and go somewhere safer like Syria.

I have read this morning that the US consul-general in Turkey has called on US citizens in Istanbul to steer clear of public places and locations popular with tourists. There is a threat of attacks on US and other foreign nationals by extremist groups.
