Macular Degeneration: "Eye" don't see you!

During my visit to the Retina Specialist today, I got some terrific news! I've been getting injections in my right eye for a couple of years now (usually every two or three months) to halt the progression of Wet (age) Macular Degeneration. The shots aren't painful, thank God and I'm blessed to have health insurance to pay for them (they're awfully expensive.) The doctor told me that since I haven't needed an injection for a year now, I can just go to my regular eye doctor for checkups. He said to be aware of any returning signs such as a dark smudge in my vision and to call him right away. He says there's no cure for the disease, but whether I'm cured or not, I praise God that for now, it seems to be gone! ***If you notice a dark area in your central vision or a dark curtain in your side vision, please, please call your eye doctor right away. AMD and Glaucoma can be halted with the right meds, but they can't be cured or reversed.***

@1creekgirl My father-in-law has those injections. He finds them quite uncomfortable. I don't know how anyone can tolerate them. I'm told that spinach is good for slowing the progress of ME.

I'm sorry they're uncomfortable for your father-in-law. They're not my favorite hobby , but they don't hurt and I'm so glad to be able to get them. I'm usually a little sore for a day or two, but not too bad. I haven't eaten spinach, but I have taken the vitamins, PreserVison from Bausch and Lomb. They are the AREDS 2 formula and contain Vitamins C and E, Zinc, Copper, Lutein, andZeaxanthin.

@1creekgirl My father in law was to take them too. I think he took one and stopped. He said they didn't help. This is life with him.

@xFiacre Yes, spinach is good to slowing the process and to prevent also nuts fish containing Omega3 fatty acids and wear sunglasses to block UV.

Those shots sound painful, I'm not a needle person at all-I'm a big baby! I'm glad for now you don't need them.

Thanks, they sound horrible, but they're really not. The doctor puts just a tiny needle to deaden it, then the regular one later that I don't even feel.

My Mom had the same, she had a total of 28 injections, now her view is stabilized and it seems she needs no more.

@1creekgirl Yes, she is happy because she had the same problem as the father-in-law of @xFiacre, she found the injections quite uncomfortable.

That's so sad. So many diseases can be halted, if not cured, with early intervention.

I just got a clean bill of health as far as degeneration is concerned, but the eye doctor said I could develop cataracts in 20 years or so if I don't wear sunglasses more often. I've been weiring sunglasses more often.

Mikes dad did the shots for several years but he kept getting worse. He's stubborn and wouldn't do all that the doctor told him to. That's how he is, he won't listen. It is very frustrating because it costs him, with this he is legally blind in his left eye and very limited sight in his right. So happy they worked for you. Prayers it continues to stay that way for you.
