Preston Pub Sign Studies – The Roper Hall / Dark Room

A pub that is probably named after Robert Roper, an 18th century architect from Preston. The pub is part of a chain of bars initiated by the Bass Brewery and primarily aimed squarely at the student campuses of our fair cities – these pubs are known as Scream Bars, a name apparently inspired by Edvard Munch’s famous painting, The Scream. The Adelphi pub nearby is also a Scream bar. The Roper Hall/Dark Room signs don’t really reflect their origins. The Dark Room upstairs area is often a venue for dark edged cutting edge cabaret and other live performance, including burlesque shows. The sign is just the words and a minor graphic, obscured by its own night-light. This is sadly common with signs nowadays. Arthur Chappell

Too bad the sign is obscured. This one is pretty plain compared to some you have shown us.

The sign could certainly use some pizzazz.

We used to have a 'Scream'; I always wondered who had that idea. For a while after that the same venue was called 'The Pub'. Now thankfully it has reverted to its previous name of 'The Cape of Good Hope' (don't know whether this was the original) which I like and also is especially suited to its location.

Modern, but a bit boring.

Oh dear, that sounds like poor design - if the logo is obscured by it's lighting. That said these Dark Rooms sound really intriguing to me. I wish there were more similar things here
