I found out the other day that my credit score went up which is really good. I went from "very poor" to "poor." My credit score has never come out of "very poor" in a very long time. Well, I use Credit Karma which is totally FREE. I been using it for years. Well, I found out my credit score went up 94 points. I am happy to hear that lol. I will not mention my score but where on the color chart are you?

That is amazing! Good for you! 94 points is a lot also. Last time I checked my score it was in the early 700s but I am too chicken to check it as Ive held a few thousand dollar balance on my credit card for a good 7 months. I love Credit Karma though. Seems like the only legitimately free place out there!

@yukimori right. My thought is that because I have that balance now - using up a higher percentage of my available credit - versus when I didnt have the debt - probably makes a difference :-(

The amount of the balance doesn't matter. It's how much of the available credit on that account you're using as well as whether you're paying on time.

@maezee Every payment you make lowers that as long as you're not using the card for more purchases, so it's probably going up a little at a time if you're working to pay it off. At least that's how it seems to go for me.

@carebear29 It's certainly understandable. I hope it continues to get better.

@dodo19 Me, too. If sales start rolling in and I get caught up in bills I'll start paying more stuff off

I'm afraid to look. I didn't even have credit to begin with (not that I know any way) , but apparently my ex husband put a phone bill in my name and didn't pay on it. How do you make your score go up?

@yukimori I'll just deal with it. They will come off eventually.

If you weren't married at the time you can dispute that account. I don't know if there's anything they will do if you were married. You can probably dispute it regardless. At that point it's on the agency to validate the debt and prove it's yours, and in a lot of cases they just won't do it and the debt is removed from the credit report. Apparently some times all the collection agencies get from primary creditors is a list of names and amounts, so they don't have the evidence they need to validate the debt.

Well done! I don't use credit Karma, but something similar for the UK. It seems several things help. One is to pay a mobile phone bill regularly and the other is to have a credit card you use but pay off. I too am in the poor category, but it is improving slowly as I move away from the effects of divorce etc.

It's probably because you got the walmart card now with a balance.
