Part of Home Schooling is teaching children real life skills. My husband had a few hours off today so he is teaching our son how to read a tape measure. They are measuring everything! My husband also gave our son a tape measure and a hammer. =) When my husband has a job for himself he's going to take our son with him sometimes. My son is BEYOND excited about this! I love when my kids are excited about learning something new!

That's fantastic! It seems like kids understand concepts better when they're able to apply them to real situations. I bet your son is going to learn a lot from this time with your husband.

That is great! It is excited to learn new things. I think I still get that way when reading something new and interesting.

@celticeagle I would prefer him stick to his dream of being an architect. We know the struggles that come with being a contractor since that's what my husband does for a living. I don't want our son to struggle like we have.

Our son did the same thing with my hubby, and he learned to apply his math skills while he did it. Sadly, today as an adult, he didn't retain those skills, but he has a good enough job that he can hire it out-he learned that from Daddy too as the years rolled on.

@Juliaacv Yeah my son is a fast learner hands on just like his dad but he's also very book smart too. He wants to be an architect when he's older so I'm sure some of this will be helpful. =) That's good that your son has a good job!

That is awesome and something that they need to know and will always use. I am glad your husband is going to take him on a job sometime. That will be a great experience for him.

@happy2beme Yeah they had a good time together and my son picked it up so well! It helps that he's very smart. He's been on a couple jobs with my husband already but never with his own tools!

Real life examples are a good way to learn. He will retain this lesson for longer than any textual one and actually learn it rather than just memorizing it.
