Shyness

When I was a little girl I lived at my grandmother's. Mom and I had a small trailer across the drive way from their house. I was pitifully shy. I can recall running in the house when I saw the mailman coming down the road. When I got older and had a child I would send her out to ask the waitress for more of this or that and to do other things as well. I can remember some girlfriend's help in boyfriends too when I was a teen. So shy. It was pathetic. I am still shy in some situations but have had to overcome this big time in being a spokesperson for my daughter . Explaining to professionals about her learning disability. (It was not a big enough deal to really show up on scores and things but was an issue for her in life. ) So, down through the years I have improved but it was hard at times.

I'm not sure if I was shy, or just didn't know what to say (if anything, I was rather quiet). I felt socially awkward for the longest time, but finally "blossomed" after getting a part time job in retail at the beginning of college. Kids do change everything though . . . I had less of a problem speaking up since having them. It was/is hard still at times, but it's good we both improved and are perhaps still improving .

I think that shyness is partly not knowing what to say and how to handle social situations. I was quiet too. A retail job would be a good way to overcome it . Kids help us blossom out. We have to communicate for them at times and have to strong for them.

@celticeagle Exactly. I was actually a bit sheltered growing up, and my mom tended to be in the quiet side too. Oh yah, that retail job really helped me to get out of my shell! Yep - we have to be strong for our kids, that's for sure . . . and that helped me to toughen myself up as well .

You have to do what needs to be done, and good for you for overcoming your shyness enough to help your daughter.

one can fight shyness, but at heart never really get comfortable with being social, glad you have worked yourself to work on that, it's not easy

Now it isn't. I had it pretty well handled and now this social anxiety.
