Do you need to take 10,000 steps a day to keep fit?

According to fitness tracker manufacturers one needs to take at least 10,000 steps a day to get fit and lose weight. Assuming you take 3 steps to cover one meter, then you need to walk 3,333m to achieve your target of 10,000 steps a day. Now you may think that 3km or so is quite a distance but actually it’s not. Just do an errand or two for your loved ones at the local supermart or grocery store. Don’t use the car or public transport. Just find one that is about 2 km from your home and start walking. A round trip would probably cover 10,000 steps. And if you live in a high rise building, don’t take the elevator; use the staircase. At first it may seem difficult but with constant practice it will be easily achievable. You’ll feel and look good after a month of such activity. Do you believe that one needs to take 10,000 steps a day?

@RitzzView I'm afraid not unless you live in a large mansion with many rooms and gardens and where you need to go from one location to another.

@HAPPSINGH Yes, I even walk at garden. I just instinctively walk..even when mylotting or when I am in a phone call, or even when I am on my earphones.. And these are what I do when I am at home..so just mentioned about my home. Otherwise my love for walking do take me out too..

I could feel my legs were more toned when I started walking again. If I need to get to downtown, I won't take the bus because their timetables suck and I'd rather just walk than wait minutes at the bus stop. So I end up walking 4+ km per day. The more you do the easier it gets, I also lost weight (not a lot though) and I feel the difference, my breath is strong enough and I don't feel fatigued when I come back home. Then I don't know the exact steps required, I think it's more about the time you take to walk. At least 30 minutes of fast paced walk is good for the heart and lungs, definitely.

@sabtraversa Good for you. I think 4km a day is ample. And another thing it saves one's money too.

@succeednow True! The bus ticket is too expensive compared to its service here.

I do not believe that it's a matter of how many steps you take every day, the important is to walk. I know for sure that I make more, because I go every day to collect the mail from our mail box at the post office and the round trip is 4 Km.

@LadyDuck Yes, 10,000 steps is just a target which they (fitness tracker people) have worked out. This also helps them to sell their product. I believe it's psychologically satisfying when one sees on the device that one has managed to achieve the target level. Of course, your trip of 4 km a day is ample.

@succeednow I think that it's only psychological to see that you reached a target.

I wear my fitbit everyday and it motivates me to get my steps in. I think that is it important to get at least 10,000 steps in. I know I had days that were triple that. It is a great way to keep in shape and feel fit.

@DrorBiton No, it's not a myth. They have carried out studies to show that by walking 10,000 steps a day, one's health can be improved. Of course, there are other forms of exercise that can be done to improve on one's health.
