I am so proud of a certain 14 year old boy that resides here. My grandson. He goes to the ASCENT(stands for Alternative Students Courageously Exploring New Territory) program at middle school which helps him with learning issues due to his ADHD and ODD problems. He is in the eighth grade this year. He got 5 B's in art, health, English, earth science and study skills. He got and A in pre-algebra(he has always been good at math) and in reading skills. The latter has been an issue for Josh,as has English, in earlier years. Instead of the many applications the teacher usually wants to go over that they use to help Josh do better behaviorally this time it was only rather usual teen stuff this time and not much of that. Saying inappropriate things to his peers and such like that. Oh, and trying to get him not to draw on his papers. He also has a problem of talking in class and to himself when set doing a task by himself. He has gotten a lot better at these things however. Very proud of him. He has really improved over the last two years he has been in ASCENT.

Saying inappropriate things to peers at 14 is...age-appropriate for 14-year-old boys. Glad his grades are good. Send him to me and I'll take him hiking.

I thought the same thing. And, that it could be a lot worse. He has come a long way. I wish I could. He needs the exercise.

I am proud to hear this. Education has improved a lot over the years. They called me retarded because I couldn't read or do math. I did great in science so I could read. I just had trouble with some subjects. Anxiety, I know now, was a major problem at home and I couldn't learn things like English, diagramming sentences. I always passed barely in English, but I realized I was labeled and not really retarded. What a title to put on a kid.

I was horrible in school. Now I think it was due to shyness, ADHD and depression, anxiety and lack of much help at home. My mom was depressed and not much good to me. She was working full time and that was all she could do. I always did well in English and literature but horrible in math, science, etc. They used to call my daughter retarded too. I'm glad that terminology has changed.
