Welcome to this weekend’s Suddendeath poetry challenge, Ode to Suess! Anyways, rules are as follows, write a poem in any style using the five words that I give you. Write it in one sitting or in under an hour (only to quash your inner editor, rules are loose there). Add it here, OR link in a comment so we can enjoy each other’s' poems. The words can be in any plurality or tense. Today’s words are: cat, hat, fat, rat, bat
My entry is as below:
Cat's do not wear hats,
no they do not at that.
But what about a rat,
or even a bat?
No they don't wear hats,
not even if fat.
Cat's do though wear smiles,
Sneakily with guile
while they plot and compile
end of the world to defile
a change in their lifestyle,
most despicably vile.
*Dr. Suess wrote many children's books with wit and charm, with a unique rhyme to them, this is what I was aiming for, the wit of something like Cat in the Hat, or Green Eggs and Ham

You're a batty old bat! yowled the cat
staring adoringly at his self in the mirror
Perhaps a hat is what I need to complement
my purr-fectly fine physique!
The bat, meantime, muttered words like fat
and where's a rat when you need one?
Better than a treadmill for such a chub
but hey, whose to say that to a mirrored bombaster?

@sallypup sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, one never knows.

@Jessicalynnt Thanks for the compliment. I don't do well with forced rhymes.

I love dr. sseuss. I would like to try to do this, but I'm distracted right now.... I'll try to get to it later though when the kids are not being loud. :-)

                    An Ode to Vinnie
They're never welcome
Those blue eyes
Freezing your heart
Even hooded by the brim
Of that old fedora hat
But each month like clockwork
You look up and see them
Quiet as a cat
They don't announce themselves
Until they meet your own
"You did good this month,"
In that deep rumble,
"Better be a fat cut,"
And his hand reaches out
Waiting for the envelope
Once more, as so often before
You think you might say no
But your own eyes fall
To the bat in his other paw
And you swallow your pride again
With a sigh, you reach
Beneath the counter again
Pull out your hard work
In that plain white paper
And set it in his hand
A hint of a grin,
"Don't think to rat on us,"
As if reading your mind
There's no risk of that
Vinnie knows your fear
And those blue eyes own you

Wow, an odd direction to be sure, but I love it. Well done!
