Keeping plastic on furniture (chairs, couch, mattress, etc)

I've encountered many people keeping the original plastic on their furniture to prolong the appearance or prevent stains. No one in my family does this, thankfully.
I think it's a waste! You should enjoy your furniture not keep it in plastic
And for the most part, some furniture now a days comes with a warranty or option for warranty.
For instance, our new bed has a 10 year warranty (not from stains) but if the bed dips a certain amount anywhere on the bed, they will replace us a new one!
I know Macy's also has an extended warranty for their furniture too that is really good!
Do you keep the plastic on your furniture? The weirdest was when I went to a friends house and her mattress was still in the original plastic. We sat on her bed to watch tv and it was just weird hearing the crackly noises.
But if you do - that's cool too! We all have our differences. I personally prefer not to have my stuff in the original packaging.

Haha.. No, I'm not that kind of person who does this.
But I notice that in my workplace, the new manager's chair which is in his office is still wrapped in plastic! I guess the manager does this to prevent dust or stains...
But the chair was bought last semester..

I can't remember who (or own what site) but someone mentioned the very same thing about plastic on furniture - and they also said it was common to see that in the household of a particular culture (can't remember which one it was). I remember at my daughter's friend's house (the family lived with their grandparents), there was one big room that served as an extra dining room and living room together . . . and all of the furniture was still in plastic. And none of the kids were allowed in that room! But for our furniture - nah, I don't care for the plastic look - it doesn't go with our decor

@infatuatedbby It's so funny keeping that tacky plastic on furniture . . . I mean I know they want to keep it in prestine condition - but that's just crazy. They might as well cover everything in the house at that point - and then cover the plastic with plastic to protect the plastic too!
My parents have those "only for guests" furniture too - we hardly sat on those extra sets - but they were there when guests came (and they didn't even sit on it - always came to the casual rooms
)

I randomly thought of this when another myLot member wrote about if it bothered you if someone sat on your mattress or do you like a soft or hard mattress.
I thought about the plastic on furniture! I think it happens more in Asian cultures!
I know a family friend has chinese hard furniture where the plastic is on there, & you don't sit on the chairs either lol!
Our living room is hardly used as well
I sat on the dining table maybe 5 times since they bought a new set.. and that new set has been 10+ years already lol.

We take off the plastic too! Oh yes, I think the same happened to my parents' stove. It was so seamless they didnt know it was plastic but when they found out it was, we peeled it off too!

I don't do that either. I knew a family that did, I always found it weird and didn't like going in their house.

I don't leave plastic on anything. We have couch covers which are fabric for our living room couch as it's old and a bit torn up due to having dogs. We wash the covers before any company comes over. It would annoy me to sleep on a bed covered with plastic. Lamps covered with plastic are a fire hazard as the plastic could melt and catch on fire.

That makes completely sense =) And you got that right ~ plastic can be a fire hazard on some products!

@jstory07 Yes - that will always keep your furniture good and clean / protects your furniture.

I agree with you...furniture was made to be sat on and used, not preserved as if it was a museum piece! But I can understand why many people want their furniture to last as long as possible, because it is just so darn expensive. I get it. No one wants to have to replace furniture every so many years when it costs so much.

They should last a good amount before replacing. Well depends on how they care for it
They still sell sofa covers or other things to protect your furniture too but why the plastic!

Do you still leave the plastic on?
I would think it'd be hard to sleep on? When I sat on my friends bed it was slippery even with the bed sheets.

Huh... I need to look into our mattress's warranty if that's the case. It has a pretty significant dip in it even though it's not that old. If they'll replace it, that would be wonderful!
The only plastic-covered mattress in the house is the kid's, because I didn't want to deal with accidents. But that's a cover I purchased for it, not the original packaging. Really didn't need it, though... come to think of it, neither one of the kids has really had more than a couple accidents since potty training.

Yes you should!
We bought a Queen mattress a few months ago from Macy's. It's a Sealy mattress. All Mattress sold by Macy's has a 10 year warranty.
My sisters mattress dipped and they came out inspected it and granted her a check to get a new one. She used the money toward a new mattress there. You should check and see the warranty of where you bought your mattress
That is understandable you have a cover for the kids!
And the kids did well since potty training - that's helpful for mom! (you)

That plastic is the first thing off. I do know people who leave the plastic on their mattresses.
