The hook up

Get your mind out of the gutter! I'm talking about hooking up the roomie to the PD machine not some other kind of hook up. And I hear you now ask... PD machine? Has Elic's roomie become bionic? I've mentioned that my roomie has had to start dialysis, I think... But she hasn't started hemodialysis because that would interfere with her working. What she is doing is peritoneal dialysis. Here is an article about peritoneal dialysis. What she is doing is the APD kind. So, since last Monday, we have been doing this at home. I was trained to do the hook up and unhooking. Now, this is more than just hooking her up to a bag. Its hooking up, in her case, 3 bags and to prime the tubes, then to hook her up to the bags. We did pretty good the first few days. We had the instructions up where we could double check them. But the last 3 nights she didn't get the instructions up. Friday night I got the bags hooked up and undid the clamps, but forgot to break the fragibles. Last night, I broke the fragibles, but forgot to undo the clamps. Both time it delayed the priming. So, tonight I hooked up the bags, then broke the fragibles and undid the clamps. I got her all hooked up in a timely manner and as I was leaving the room I asked: "Have you opened your clamp?" meaning the clamp on her transfer set. Oops...

Its a matter of doing the things you are trained on. The other day the clock I had been using stopped (bad battery.) But, I had noticed that if I had counted the number of times I did the soaping of my hands it worked out right about 2 minutes. However, the roomie doesn't want to do hemo because it would be during work time and only 3 times a week not every day.

@JustBhem Right now its only at night, it can take upward to 10 hours, but she is sleeping during most of it. If her kidneys get worse, and they will, then she might have to start doing some "exchanges" during the day. But that's like 20 minutes to fill and a "dwell" of at least 2 hours before the 10 minutes to empty.

@ElicBxn I see. Peritonial is how long? How many times in a day?

Does she stay at home to do the peritoneal dialysis? This must be uncomfortable and not easy to set up.

She does the peritoneal dialysis at home, over night while she's sleeping - or supposed to be sleeping. She's off for another 3 weeks...

@ElicBxn You say well "supposed to be sleeping", I do not believe she can sleep during the treatment.

@LadyDuck The machine does it all. Most of the time she doesn't feel anything.
