This is arguably the biggest ever hit to emerge as a hidden track as it was used as the theme tune for the immensely popular Friends sit com. The band hadn’t completely finished recording the song when the commissioning series producers needed it in 1995, but as the opening credit sequence of the show (featuring the cast messing around in a fountain) only used part of the song rather than the full track, its impatient producers took off with a copy of what there was and as the show became an instant hit, the recordings of the song were rushed into to tie in production, and by sheer oversight they were left unlisted from the sleeve notes on early prints. The theme became a big hit and TV cast members gleefully turned up to join in with the video for it, hijacking the instruments from the musicians over the course of the song. It’s a refreshing change from videos of theme songs that just feature random clips from the shows and movies. The song is listed properly on later pressings of the CD so if your copy doesn’t list it you have a first edition. Composers Crane & Kaufman must really love the show’s own endless repeats, seeing every episode as ‘The one that made us very rich indeed’.
