This morning I watched an American Masters documentary about Carole King. It's funny the things one forgets in life. I had forgotten how much she gave to music. I was also pleasantly surprised at how many songs she wrote either with a partner or by herself. I had no idea how many songs. She wrote for Aldon Music and Don Kirschner's Dimension Records in the 60's and wrote a long list of hits for various artists. Performers like Aretha Franklin("You Make Me Feel"), The Drifters("Up On The Roof), The Shirelles("Will You Love Me Tommorrow"), and The Monkeys(Pleasant Valley Sunday"), just to name a very few.
She first saw James Taylor preform at the Night Owl in 1967 and met him in 1969. This began a life long friendship which included them playing together for many years.
2016 is the 45th anniversary of the Tapestry album. For those who aren't familiar with this popular album there are such greats as "So Far Away", "It's Too Late", "I Feel The Earth Move", and my alltime favorite "You've Got A Friend". Great songs, great sound, great listening, great, great, great.
I am so proud of this woman. She moved to Idaho in 1977 and loved the state. (She has lived here ever since.) In 1990 she began working with the foundation, Foundation for the Wild Rockies, and helped to pass the NREPA(North Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act).
Douglas McGrath wrote a book about Carole King, her music and her life, that has now been made into a broadway play entitled Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Its debute was at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Broadway in January 2014.
She even had time for several marriages and some kids. What a gal!
Official site for tickets to see BEAUTIFUL- The Carole King Musical on Broadway in New York City. BEAUTIFUL tells the inspiring true story of her rise to stardom.

Yes, she is a great artist. I got to meet her here once when she visited Eugene during the George McGovern Presidential campaign. She is quite petite and delightful to talk with.
