...Who is Donald Trump

December 4, 2016 4:12am CST
Me and my colleague was discussing about US Election. It was indeed a hot topic. We both agree that this time Mr Donald Trump will win, and hearing that name, our manager tries to jump in the conversation, and asked who is Donald ? Complete silence in our department for 2 mins. And he justified by saying he didn't get time to watch news. And he started laughing so everyone does. I know he was embarrassed . But he left saying there is meeting will catch us later. So my question is - Have you ever been in part of discussion where you are no known of topic. And What is your way of escaping the discussion when you see Manager is involved. Have you ever being embarrassed like this ?

I avoid to tell anything if I do not know what is the topic about. My father was a bit like your manager : he was interested by only a few subjects and was zapping anything else, and it could result in very funny issues. He came once at home when I was a teen and told to my mother : "Some people are very weird. I was going to my car when a guy came to me and said : 'I am X. I am lost in your city and I need to go to this address. Would you drive me ?' I do not care about his name, I did not knew this guy, and I responded 'You are perhaps Mr X, but I am not Mr Taxi.'" X was a famous French movie actor, and he probably realized that he was not famous for everyone.

Hmmm... Top, the response your dad gave is the same response I once gave my son... He kept insisting I HAD to take him here, there and other places. I told him he could pay for the gas (he was 18 and working a good job) in a taxi or he could buy his own car.... It was not my job to be a taxi driver for the rest of my life. I had other things I thought were more important at that time... He decided to test that by calling and asking me to pick him up at a convenience store about fifteen minute drive from home. I arrived, he was not there so I went home... He later claimed he had gone across the street to talk with friends and I should have waited for him to come back to the store.... He wasn't happy when I started laughing.... and kept giggling off and on for half an hour after that! (I am grinning just remembering his face when I started laughing!) He didn't call and ask me for rides anymore, though!

I've been in embarrassing discussions many times. Now, I just keep my mouth shut. If I don't, I laugh it off.

If I overheard part of a discussion and didn't know the subject, I say nothing. If it sounds interesting to me, I might stop and listen to the rest of the discussion to see what it is actually about, or I might continue on my way ignoring everyone around me. (If a name interests me, I might/have caught one of my friends who was involved in the discussion and ask him/her who the person being discussed is/was, but I really dislike embarrassing myself in a group of people.)

Ah yes. I used to put my foot in my mouth all the time when I was younger. Since then I've learned to be quiet and listen.

Hey hey hey, I hope you earned well here. I like this post of yours and I think I've been in this awkward situation before and I'm not sure how I managed to get out of that embarrassing moment. Hahaha
