Sometimes you have to state the obvious in these countdowns. @JohnRoberts had this one pegged from the get-go. If you're going to mention songs that have the word "country" in the title, I don't think you can omit this one, the next on my list of ten favorite songs that mention "country."
#6: Take Me Home, Country Roads - John Denver
As my dear mother of blessed memory used to say, "He's right. It is 'almost heaven,' it's next to Kentucky."
One of the state songs of the great state of West Virginia, "Take Me Home, Country Roads" was John Denver's breakout song as a singer. Of course, by the time he recorded this in 1971 he was already living comfortably due to the fact that he'd written the song "Leaving on a Jet Plane."
Co-written by Denver and what would become the nucleus of the Starland Vocal Band, "Take Me Home, Country Roads" is a beautiful song, period. You don't have to be from West Virginny to appreciate the longing to go home that this song so eloquently paints in its lyrics.
It's one of John Denver's signature songs; and, even 19 years after his death, one that immediately comes to mind when you think of him.
Take Me Home, Country Roads
Written by Bill Dansfort, Taffy Nivert, and John Denver
Recorded by John Denver
From Poems, Prayers, & Promises, 1971

Starland Vocal Band? Yuck. They should have stayed with John Denver! My girlfriend says this is one of the first songs she learned to play on the guitar.

@JohnRoberts -- there's a difference in liking some afternoon delight and liking the song "Afternoon Delight."

@JohnRoberts - Oh, I never turn down some afternoon delight. Hate the song, though.

I told someone here but I'm not sure who now but we landed in Thailand New Year's Eve in the middle of the night in the late 90s and a Thai band was singing this in a nightclub near the airport. It seemed really weird. I'm never been overseas before but certainly didn't expect to hear 'Country Roads' in Thailand.
