He didn't want to go to prison so he killed himself

So instead of accepting he might get a three year sentence (and have to serve about one year in prison) he gave himself a 'life' sentence.
It seems he'd been threatening to kill himself off and on for a few years (every time he got depressed) and his wife finally got tired of hearing it and said "Well do it'.
And he hung himself.
Third DUI/driving with no license conviction...which he brought on himself...and he couldn't handle the consequences.
He may have been an old friend, but...he made me a bit mad.
I knew he was depressed...but I didn't know why until yesterday.
And having been 'in the pen' several times myself over the years (I wasn't always this charming debonair person after all) I know that a year goes by pretty fast, actually.
Being dead forever though...well, that lasts a long time.
If the choice had been mine?
Lock me up.
I wouldn't like it...but I'd see you in about a year or so.
Instead of never again.

That is a sad story, his depression must have been deep.

When our maid robbed my jewelllery I did not report as that would mean being busy going in and out of police stations and the court for years and years.

That is a sad story. Here in California you can do work release and avoid prison or jail for your thrid DUI. Has to do with over crowding of prisons and I am not sure everyone gets that option. Definitely have to have the money for that option. I have heard that correction officers get mad when they see people in prison for DUI's if they did not hurt anyone. It is expensive as heck, but people could still keep their job depending on the company they work for. He probably should have talked to a lawyer before coming up with that solution, unless other things were involved that no one knew about.

Such ones are not thinking clearly, which is sad. We can't do a thing to help once the act is done.

That solution may have flickered through my consciousness when things were bad. The thought was always quickly discarded. Another less permanent solution prevailed.
