Jimmy Connors' Quote

You remember Jimmy Connors, I’m sure, the tennis pro, who was known for his competitive and boorish antics on and off the tennis court.
He had this to say: “The trouble with experience is that by the time you have it you are too old to take advantage of it.”
This might be somewhat true in the world of sports but in many other genres of life, it is not the case.
What do you think?

That's right. Some of these young athletes in particular. I watched a lot of the Olympics this year, as usual and the ability of these young persons is amazing, especially the gymnasts.

@JudyEv Yes, it was sad, what happened with the swimmer, getting into all that trouble just when his future was looking good..

@IreneVincent They are young to be coping with so much pressure and exposure. No wonder some of them fall off the rails occasionally.

Yes, it all depends on several things. However, most athletes, except maybe for golfers, retire young, due to aging.

That is so true!! I have a LOT of experience now but my kids won't pay attention and I'm sure my grandkids won't either when they're old enough to need advice. We always know so much more than our parents and grandparents. It's amazing, though, how wise we become by the time those kids are in their 30s and 40s!

I know that's true. As a new mother I had a lot to learn, even though I had some experience at babysitting for my cousins FIVE children. I knew quite a bit but still had a lot to learn. My kids are good kids. All grown now and doing well.

No, there is truth to it. The experience we often gain is sometimes to late to apply when we are at the end of the line in age and career wise.

I'm happy that I finally got my novel published. I put all my writing skills on hold for 40 years working another business successfully, selling jewelry. Writing was not making me any income so I had to switch to something that would. Now, I'm retired from my jewelry business and I'm writing again. But, it still isn't bringing in any income. At least, though, I can say that I am a published novelist. I hope to get a couple more things published.
