They Just Added 20 Minutes to the School Day

The school district passed a referendum last month allowing them to borrow money so they could do some significant improvements at our high school and upgrade the security at the other schools. Last night, the school board approved the second, surprise, part of that. They are adding 20 minutes to our kids' school days (10 minutes earlier in the morning and 10 minutes later in the afternoon) starting next month.
The idea behind this is, by adding the extra time, they can end the school year on May 22 rather than the second week of June. This will allow them to start the school improvements that much earlier, saving the district money in the process.
They are doing the same thing next year too.
Personally, I think they should just keep this as a permanent thing if they can. I never liked the idea of my kids going to school into June to begin with because the last month is usually busy work anyway, they usually stop bringing home homework by the beginning of May. It'll also give the district a little more flexibility with building in snow days. They won't need to be made up during the middle of summer.
As for the earlier start time, I don't see much of an issue. My youngest daughter might find it a bit difficult since she's normally dragging a bit on school mornings. Her older sister will need to be at school right about the same time I already drop her off on my way to work.

It seems like a pretty good idea. Save money in the long as everything is up and running to handle longer school days and more off days means less use of utilities etc. Plus the kids will gladly trade longer days for a longer summer.

It is a great way to safe money and it is great that the kids get out early. I think it would be good if they could keep it a permanent thing. You never know they just might
