mince pies and coffee

After work this fine evening we had a small get-together in our department. In the past, when our team was smaller and yet to be amalgamated into the other team, we would have an end of term luncheon shindig in one of the classrooms. Non-alcoholic drinks would be provided by the College and everyone would bring some food to share. Music would play in the background, cheesy Christmas tunes getting us into the festive spirit.
This afternoon's festive offering was forgettable. No music. A smattering of mince pies and doughnuts. No drinks provided ... bring your own coffee, why don't you.
It may have become apparent to you, Dear Reader, that I'm a bit of an anxious introvert; a room full of people milling around, maybe even wanting to indulge in some form of small talk with me, takes me to teeter on the clifftop. I survived five minutes and then I grabbed a doughnut and mince pie and hurried back into the other room.
Ah, silence. Pure heaven. I much prefer the sound of quiet to the sound of noise. Sometimes noise is good, but thirty people vying for attention is not a good noise. It's more of a painful, anxiety-inducing sound, everybody talking but nobody really listening.

I wonder if most people aren't, but go just to make themselves look good.

I'm not going to our staff party either...despite what is now bordering on annoying harassment for me to go.
Head chef sticks up for me as he's the only one who knows I used to be agoraphobic and didn't leave my house much for years
...I still don't do well in crowds or social situations although by next year I think it'll be different.

Oh, I didn't go to the actual staff party. That was in a hotel a couple of weeks ago, one of those events where they cram three or four companies into one room and provide an insipid meal. Not my idea of fun! It's ridiculous that someone needs to stick up for you, others should just accept that you're not going. Of course, they could be worried that the party will be really boring without you there!

@Poppylicious they're trying to be friendly as they know I've not had a job or got out much for a decade but it's getting wearing now
We've had those sorts of staff parties at our hotel for 2 weeks now...it is hell
but only a couple more weeks of them then it's over
I was quite surprised at the quality of the food when cooking for 150 people all needing to be served at more or less the same time.
It is surprisingly good at our place...I've eaten a lot of christmas dinners at midnight lately

It was very tasty. I gobbled it up quite quickly, but the mince pie was taken home for Husband because I can't stand them!

@poppylicious In such gatherings the noise level keeps creeping up, everyone shouting to be heard and nothing of any consequence being said. To be avoided by sane people at all costs.

@Poppylicious Use that word two more times this week and it then qualifies as a real word and it's all yours.

Yes, spot the insane. Managers tend to stay the longest so they must be the insane-ist. I don't think that's a word.

It's difficult when there's so many voices nattering away!
