When I was very young I loved to have my grandmother read to me at bedtime. She had kept a 'primer', as they were called, a story book from her school days, called a primer, that she would share stories from with me. There was The Little Match Girl, one about a young woman and some indians I can't remember the title of, and this one I am going to share with your here among others that I have forgotten. She had part of it memorized and she would recite it and then read the rest of it to me. I loved it and it is such a wonderfully simplistic story and I have such a wonderful memory of it being read to me and what it stands for that I enjoy sharing it both with my family and on whatever site I am on at this time of year. I am going to recite a little of it to you and then you can go to this link and read it in its entirety. I hope you enjoy it and share it with your children as I have down through the years. It is the story of the baby Jesus being born. The Mouse and the Moonbeam by Eugene Field (written around 1879) "Whilst you were sleeping l'il Dear-my- soul strange things happened; but that I saw and heard them, I should never have believed them. The clock stood, of course, in the corner, a moonbeam floated idly on the floor...." Here is the link:
As a little mouse dances on Christmas Eve, she tells the story of her unfortunate sister, who was caught by the cat. Eventually, the moonbeam enters shines through the window, and, asked for a story, tells the tale of Dimas, whose father watched the sheep

There are some lovely bits in that story, I like the way it was told, and esp the moonbeam speaking of the thing it has seen

I remember the story well - rather sweet after the bleakness of The Little Match-girl
