They Had a Tea Party But I Missed It

I believe that in order for learning to be relevant it has to have a practical application. Especially for our mentally handicapped kids. We work with them on academics, but they need the skills to live their lives and be accepted socially.
Mrs. B. has been helping our young lady learn good manners. Simple things like how to eat, wipe your face with a napkin, use your silverware. They do this with a place mat that shows table settings and they have polite conversation over pretend food.
There was a pay off. After lunch one day last week Miss A got to invite her female classmates to a tea party. The day before the teacher helped her make Rice Krispies Treats. I am not sure what beverage they served. The teacher, and all the girls from class got to have these treats.
Our favorite substitute teacher also came. She brought old fashioned hats and gloves. Mrs. B. had a little lesson on manners while they enjoyed the extra half hour of social time. I have not seen pictures yet. Hopefully Miss A will demonstrate these manners when she is in the lunch room and in her class.
I did not get to come because we have a male student in that class as well. I used that time for one on one work, with a coloring page based on math problems.

It was best, though, because Josh needs someone to monitor what he does as well.

@Jessicalynnt He would have become a clown and done outrageous things to make himself the focus of the event. Elijah did not get to go either. He is a couple of grades younger but this is basically the "homeroom" for four students. Part of the point was to get Abagail to be the center of attention in a positive way.

I don't see why the male isn't invited.. boys need to learn table manners just as much as girls do. I think its a really cute idea though.

I think it would have just gotten unmanageable if the entire class was invited. J has other special things he gets to do that A does not. We do discuss manners and other important things a lot but we are also trying to help her build up her social skills with her peers.

Around here we always have class parties and we had a week of art experiences and we sang at an assisted living home and just totally blew any semblance of normal. I would enjoy the Christmas Karaoke, so invite me next year.
