Home Made Mince Pies

There’s nothing quite like the smell of home made mince pies slowly filling the house as they bake in a hot oven. I’m not an amazing baker by any means, in fact it’s something I rarely do these days. I remember when I was a child, my Mum spent hours in the kitchen at Christmas making Christmas cake, mince pies, home-made stuffing and a huge trifle. It all used to taste wonderful and the smells were amazing. I still reckon you can’t beat my Mum’s trifle to this day. Thankfully she’s making one this year to bring here, along with her amazing home-made stuffing. My daughter loves baking, so this year I promised her we would make mince pies. We have cheated a fair bit and bought a packet mix but time has been massively against us with work commitments so this was the best we could hope for. Little Miss was in her element mixing, stirring and binding the mixture with her hands. She rolled out the dough (a little thickly but I left her to it), used the cutters to make the cases and greased the tray. Then she placed her cuttings in the tray and spooned in the mince meat. She topped them with another cut out, popped a hole in the top and brushed them with milk. They smelled absolutely delicious cooking away in the oven. We made two lots and couldn’t wait to taste them! After they’d cooled a little, we ate the crumbling ones (well, they wouldn’t do for Santa!) with a little squirty cream. DELICIOUS! I’m sure there are many people who go all out with their baking and are fab at it, for us though, this was a lovely festive hour or two, cost very little and tasted delicious.

what is in the "mince"? is it like what we call "mincemeat" which is really fruit and nuts?
