Festivus For The Rest Of Us?

Can Festivus really be for the rest of us? And, who exactly would the rest of us be?
Some will celebrate Christmas on December 25, while others will celebrate Chanukah, which just happens to be on the same day as Christmas this year.
Those celebrating Kwanzaa will begin this celebration on December 26. What do others celebrate this time of year?
This will, of course, depend on their belief system. Some are very upset that there are people who do not celebrate as they do. Why is this?
You may have friends who celebrated Saturnalia earlier this month.
Many people have no clue there are feasts celebrated that are different from what they do.
The video about Festivus shared here was found on youtube.

it must be hard for Jews, Muslims and others to see media saturation of Christmas cheer while their own keynote festivals barely get any attention - they have to take Xmas off work but need to take their own celebration days out as holiday leave

because they live in USA, if we lived where their roots are, we would have to take their holidays as they come. they would not change for us.

@bunnybon7 But the first people in North America were not Christian. Canada has never been declared a Christian nation. Has the US?
In fact the people who came to North America after the First Nations often came for religious freedom. My ancestors came to Canada from the American colonies after 1776. They were United Empire Loyalists. Since my family has been here for so long; does that mean I should decide how others worship? Or how they live their lives? I don't think being here longer means I get to decide what new comers do. I really think this is something we need to remember as North Americans.

Yes, there are varied celebrations and there are those that don't celebrate any of them. I am one of those. Sunday was just another day to be alive and to do things that I like, like swimming, worshipping with my friends as I do every Sunday and visiting some friends that were in the hospital.

I celebrate the solstice. I wish there was broader understanding that December doesn't belong solely to the Christians.

No, December does not only belong to Christians. It would seem most would know this by now.

The rejoicing part of any festival is shared these days regardless of religion.

I think diversity is a wonderful thing and I wish we were taught more about other celebrations. I celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday but I certainly wish everyone the opportunity to enjoy the time off no matter what they believe and celebrate.

It would be nice if everyone would be tolerant of others.

@PatZAnthony It really is and I love reading about it here on myLot. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't learn something new.

I know one particular mylotter who believes that her holiday, Christmas, is THE only holiday. Shame on her. I celebrate Chanukah, but still wish others Merry Christmas or whatever holidays they celebrate, even Festivus! It is simply arrogance, intolerance, and ignorance. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Chanukah has been celebrated for more centuries than many other things-
No Christmas here! Festivus works for many, as silly as it seems.

@PatZAnthony I heard that many practice it now, since Seinfeld made it popular. Happy Festivus for the rest of us!

I watch this video and I still haven't a clue. Is 'Festivus' a celebration or something make up? Any way, I don't know of the others festival you mentioned either. Merry Christmas to you.

It was something the character on that TV show (Seinfeld) made up out of disgust for the behavior he and some others displayed during the Christmas Holiday. Some actually do call their holiday Festivus b/c they do not do any of the other holidays.

@PatZAnthony Okay, then my opinion is that it really does not matter what you call a festival. It is more important to be sincere and have real family moments with love ones. So the ritual is not binding but human sentiment is. No one person, ethnic group, or religion should have a monopoly. December is for all.

i like the idea of festivus-but if my family did an "airing of grievances" it would last a month in this house..

Indians don't really have anything going on right now....if anything...you could call it 'Marriage Saeson' here...but that's individual celebration.
