An Aerial with a Difference

We stayed in a unit near our son over Christmas. He lives in a suburb of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. Parked on the street outside the door was a car which had lost its radio aerial. Some people just jam a wire coat-hanger where the aerial should be. This seems to work just as well. However the owner of this car had been very creative and had bent the coat-hanger into a very recognisable shape of Australia. Do people use wire coat-hangers in this way where you live?

That was quite creative. I don't see many coat hangers here.

The newer cars have a different sort of aerial I think.

The radio we have is out of commission but I will keep this in mind as I do not have an aerial as of now. I will remember to shape it to look like the outline of India (lol)

India would be a reasonably easy one to do. My aerial has snapped off too but I don't bother with the radio so I've never done anything about it.

@epiffanie It's instantly recognisable - at least it is to an Australian. LOL

It's a bit different isn't it? And not nearly as boring as a coat hanger. :)

@Jessicalynnt I don't really understand the mechanics of these things but they must work or people wouldn't keep using them - or would they? Maybe it's only the ovine-type people that use them.

It's been a while, but I used to see lots of cars that used coat hangers when I was little. Don't see them much any more these days, especially ones with creative shapes.

@JudyEv Pretty soon--with the way technology is progressing--antennas will be a thing of the past. Our cars will probably all have satellite receivers or some other gizmo in the future! haha

@moffittjc That's true. Even now, the new aerials are nothing like this one - or this one in its original state.

Not seen anyone do this but it is unusual and eye catching. My hubby lived in Australia for eleven years before coming back here and tells me of all the things he saw there like the wildlife. Great idea though for a Coat Hanger will think of that turn it into a Map of Spain instead.

Spain should be relatively easy to fashion from a coat-hanger. Did your husband enjoy living in Australia?

I've seen clothes hangars used to replace car aerials before, but never with this kind of imagination.

@JudyEv A lot of effort went into bending it correctly. I wonder what inspired its creation.

Very nifty - I can remember using a wire coat hanger for many things - they are very handy in the house and now to add one to my car as well

They have their uses, don't they? Some people are able to break into locked cars with the help of one of these.

I've never seen a coat hanger used as a radio antenna for a car. TV's yes. The person who did that, was very creative.

Creative indeed. People I know use coat hangers to clear a blocked drain or open a locked car door. Never saw it used in place of an ariel

Way back when with old radios you would employ a wire hanger. Everyone is iPods. No more boom boxes and transistors.

That's witty. I've seen wire coat hooks used that way, not often though. My problem has been that the aerial won't retract like it should, so it's always out
