Do You Make New Year's Resolutions?

I know some people don't believe in making New Year's resolutions because "they are impossible to keep", but I think the reason they are impossible to keep is that many times they are couched in terms of denying yourself something--quitting smoking, or dieting, or not swearing (horrors!). That's negative--no wonder you don't want to do that for a whole year! Make positive resolutions, like doing something nice for someone every day, or set goals--instead of thinking of losing weight or quitting smoking as depriving yourself, think of hitting milestones with fewer pounds or fewer cigarettes; instead of "knocking yourself out" at the gym, think about building up to more weight or more reps or more miles. I promise that a positive attitude will make things a lot easier. It always does!

That is why I make small, reachable goals. Good thinking!!!!

Thanks! No sense in making life hard for one's self.

I don't make them because I know I won't keep them. I'm not all of a sudden going to change because it is the start of a new year. Instead of saying I'll wait for the start of the new year or at the start of the week just start now. More likely to actually achieve the goal if you just stop making excuses and start right then.

Sometimes it's handy to have an easily-remembered starting point.

@AliCanary Yea but the majority of resolutions don't make it past the first few days. Someone's not going to change unless they want to so a new year doesn't mean anything.

No resolutions here! We just have never found a reason to do this.

I don't usually do new years' resolutions, but it so happens that I've been thinking of giving up sugar again and trying to do it longer than I have before. About ten years ago, I was able to give it up for five months and another time for two months. I've heard a few people recently share that when they've given up sugar they've also become pain-free and I'd like to see that for myself. I may give myself a free day or not, we'll have to see about that. Your ideas are good too, of course.

Giving up sugar is a VERY good idea. I did it before and lost a lot of weight. Felt so much better! You have to give up starch, as well--the body metabolizes it just like sugar. When I also gave up starch, my sugar cravings went away.

That's an excellent idea and one I'll remember if I get around to making a few goals for the New Year.

You can start any time! Sometimes it helps to have a target date, too, like Valentine's Day.

I really don't, but part of me wants to quit smoking. Unfortunately, part of me doesn't.

Addictions are the hardest--I've been struggling with food addictions my entire life, so I understand the battle.

I don't make resolutions, having said that we did turn our sedimentary lives around this past yer and we now exercise regularly and are feeling better than ever.

That's fantastic! Making an actual change is obviously loads better than making a promise to change.
