I was given a packet of frankfurters. I just fried them and stuffed them between bread slices. I ate them today for breakfast. Is there any other way frankfurters can be eaten. Some expert advice please Also, why are they called frankfurters. Any connection with Germany? What we make here are known as sausages. Frankfurters or 'Hot Dogs' are usually pre-cooked (so they could be eaten cold from the packet). They are usually heated by boiling, steaming or grilling and then served (sometimes with fried onion) in a long. split bread roll with mustard, ketchup or other sauces. They were originally a speciality of Frankfurt but were brought to the US by German immigrants. They are sometimes called Weiners, though that is technically a very similar sausage coming from Vienna ('Wein', in German). There's no reason why you shouldn't wrap them in any suitable Indian bread and eat them with, say, a mango or lime chutney or other sauces to your liking!

Eating with onion rings and mustard ketchup seems the best way to eat them. I will remember to do that the next time. But the packet is empty. We had a guest for breakfast I wonder why they should be treated to frying, boiling or whatever as I am told they are alleady cooked.

I just fried them and wrapped them in bread. My doubt was whether I could eat them without giving them any treatment.

Wienerle, or Wiener Würstchen - from Wien, or Vienna, not to be confused with the fermented grape product, Wein.

Chopping them and adding them to other things appeals to me. Should they be cooked again, according to you?

There are varying recommendations including that they need not be cooked. But just like you I might like to cook them or fry them but the good news is that they are already cooked.

Remove from the pack, drop them into a pan of almost boiling water and leave for about 8mins - then serve hot on a bun with mustard or ketchup. These ones are a regular feature with us:

What I doubted was whether I could eat them without giving them any treatment as I was told theyare already cooked. But most here including you have suggested that they need a bit of pampering. I fried them. I was not wrong then ae

@allknowing You did ok! :)
Leave all your prejudices behind and let the German Wurst convince you. There is a lot of sausages to try!

@allknowing Sorry. Yes. I thought you were talking about cooked ones. If they weren't pre-cooked or if we wanted them hot which is pretty usual, we'd boil them.

@JudyEv But from comments here I see they are precooked although many suggest that they get treated - either put in boiling water, or fried.

Nor me I don´t eat them anymore but I always heated them in a frying pan before eating as the idea of cold stuff did not appeal to me or the others either. Enjoy them they make a good snack or meal.

As you mention above, I too would call those in the picture above sausages. Our frankfurters look different than that and we boil them lightly, put them in some bread or a bun and smother them in tomato sauce.

You are right Val. What we ate were different. they were not tied the way we see in the picture. May be what you see in the picture could be called sausages. So you need tomato sauce. Interesting to see how they are eaten in so many different ways.

I usually either fry or bake them, sometimes I cut them into small pieces, to eat with pasta.

How do you eat Frankfurters? I don't. However, if I did like those things, I would boil them in a pot of water and then put them in a bun.

@allknowing I don't like sausage of any kind. It's all about the taste. You would think I would like them with the Belgian in me. No thanks. Not for me, none of it.

Hot Dogs (frankfurters) are extremely beloved in America. Here, we traditionally eat them in conjunction with baseball games. The history behind this is related to how the increasingly popular sport of baseball grew in popularity among immigrants in New York City. Many American immigrants in the 18th-19th century were from Germany. When the immigrants got together to enjoy a game, they would share a variety of foods, including the frankfurter! I suggest eating them in one to two ways: 1. Boil them, get some hot dog buns, and enjoy with ketchup and onions 2. Cut them into small circles, sautee with green onions, peppers, or any local vegetable, pair with some bread, and dig in :)

That is interesting - associating baseball with frankfurters. Your ideas appeal to me. I shall particularly try out using them as an ingredient.
