What Kind of Lesson was this for our Kids?

Before I start today's lesson, can I just say:
What were the Republicans in the US House of Representatives thinking when they decided to eliminate most of the ethics rules Representatives are supposed to abide by? We all know politicians are among the most ethically challenged people in the world, but for them to blatantly tell the world they were no longer be going to be bound by ethical considerations when conducting business was bold, even for such a morally corrupt group of politicians as them.
Fortunately, a few of the Republican members realized how it looked, telling the world they were doing away with the ethics rules, and managed to get them reinstated.
What kind of lesson is it for our children when our nation's leaders decide they should know longer be bound by ethics? Not a good one, I fear.

One thing it proves to kids......people need to think before the act.

@DWDavis It has been 'fixed' so not an issue at the moment.

@enlightenedpsych2 You would think they'd have some understanding of the effectiveness and pervasiveness of social media, especially Twitter, especially when their parties President uses it so effectively.

The Republicans blew this call badly.

@Deepizzaguy Politicians on both sides of the aisle are in it for themselves. They just have different ideas about the best way to benefit from their position. The Republicans think it's by doing favors for the rich. The Democrats think it's by giveaways to the lazy.

@DWDavis I agree with you. Some political pundits have always said "There is hardly any difference between Republicans and Democrats."

My kids already are fully aware how corrupt, unethical, immoral and inept our politicians are, so I'm pretty sure nothing surprises them anymore.

Your kids and mine were/are being brought up differently from a lot of the kids I teach. Many of my minority kids from economically deprived single-parent households believe that if something is not tied down, or if no one is looking, it's okay to take things that don't belong to them. The shame isn't in stealing, it's in getting caught. When they see and hear about things like what the Republicans did, our job as teachers in convincing them they should act ethically or morally becomes more impossible than it already is.

And why does this surprise you?
The honest politician is reviled and ridiculed.....by other politicians, by the media.....by the public.

A dumb blunder by Republicans that angers their own base of supporters.

I just hope Trump will be mature when he is President.

when I was reading about this I just gave the most confused look and realized...wow people are so obsessed with money that they would forget about ethics. that is monstrous! But hopefully this is not the only thing that they look at again and realize maaayybe they shouldn't mess with something that actually does good.

Many commentators I listened to were convinced the reason the Republicans wanted to gut the ethics rules was because so many of them had been caught violating them. The rules were working, and I hope they continue to do so. I'd like to see the consequences made harsher, though.
