Sunshine on My Shoulders, Please Melt the Ice Away

We woke up to abundant sunshine here in eastern NC this morning, but the temperatures were only in the teens (around -9(C)). You can probably tell from the picture, but the road in front of our house is a ribbon of ice this morning. Since the high for the day is only expected to reach 24(F)/(-4(C)), I don't know how much the ice will melt. There isn't much snow cover on the road so the asphalt should warm up from the sun shining on it most of the day, and that should help some. The worry will be the amount of ice that reforms on the road when the sun goes down and temperature drops to 11(F)/(-12(C)) overnight. I strongly suspect the school district here will have at least a two-hour delay in the morning. It looks like another lazy day at home. We got all the housework done yesterday, so today we can enjoy being home with not much to do. How is your Sunday shaping up?

I've been told or heard somewhere that the roads can break up from being continually frozen then melted. Does that happen where you are?

The phenomenon is known as frost heaves, and it can destroy roads over time. The roads around here don't suffer from it as much as those in the northern states and Canada. Temperature swings are much more dramatic up there.

@DWDavis I can understand that. What an evocative phrase 'frost heaves'. It seems to explain it exactly.

With a low of 5, it is I who should be telling you to stay warm.

I hope that ice doesn't cause you any problems tomorrow. We're having a lazy day too, though not because of the weather - it's quite mild here for the time of year.

Some areas of the county must have gotten more ice and snow than we did here. I just got a call from the school district that there will be no school tomorrow because of continued icy conditions and frigid temperatures.

The sun shining will help to melt no matter the temperature, but yup sounds like it will refreeze tonight. Strange weather the south is having, sounds more like northern weather.

The blessing of living in the south is that this will all be gone and temps will be back in the sixties by Friday.

Imagine- sunshine and ice! , if one didn't see the ice, one might be fooled into going outdoors not appropriately dressed.

My missus cautiously made her way to the mailbox to get the paper this morning. She'd bundled up against the cold but was still chilled through when she got back. It's only about a 150 foot round trip.

Lazy and unmotivated, but I did manage to clean the kitchen and dining area.
