Give Them an Inch, and They'll Take a Mile

My students that is. Or if I give them a centimeter they'll take a meter. Actually, they are supposed to do just that. We are working on scale and dimensions. Today the students learned how to determine the length of the actual objects given the size of the model or drawing and the scale factor to use. They caught onto it very well. After two extra days off, I wasn't ready to be on my feet all day. By the time I got home my back was as tight as a piano wire. It is finally relaxing some now. I haven't gotten much writing done today, and haven't gone online to take the next lesson in my writing course. I'm a lesson ahead. No worries there. How has your day gone?

Hurry on down here to NC and you'll find plenty of opportunities to sub. Teachers here are getting so burned out we keep running out of available subs because their all working.

@paigea Our subs used to be paid $50/day if they were not certified and $75/day if they were. Now they're paid by the hour and I have no idea what the hourly rate is.

@DWDavis it can be like that here. Yesterday they couldn't find another sub so they were short a teacher. When I was still teaching full time I worked at a tough school and we could rarely get a sub. It is exhausting. Are subs well payed there? I think our pay is pretty good. We had a huge blizzard yesterday afternoon and rural buses didn't run today. I expected to be called as I thought some country teachers wouldn't be able to get into the city. But I wasn't called.

Had to go out against my will so they could do whatever it they did to the parking lot. Not sure as it still looks like an ice skating rink out there. However, the movie was very good. I'm sorry your back is tight after a day on your feet. It's good your students are catching on with all that math. You must be a good teacher.

If I may ask, what movie did you see? I'll never win teacher of the year because I won't play the politics for that, but my kids tell me I'm one of the best they've ever had, so I must be doing something right.

@DWDavis I went to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It was very good. I did a review on it.

@just4him I'd like to go see that one while it's still in the theaters. I don't think it would have the same impact at home on Netflix.

Nice to hear you wanted them to do that. Always how students do the wrong thing. Nice to hear when they do what they are supposed to also.

@DWDavis True, was the most frustrating thing for me also when I was in school.

They were more willing to learn this objective because they could understand how it might be useful to them in their future. So much of math they don't understand how they'll ever use it.

Sounds as if you have a smart group of students! Today I spent most of the afternoon paying both Connecticut and Florida bills.

Most of my students struggle, to tell the truth, but when we hit something that sparks their interest they really light up. But there's those who don't seem to get interested in anything because at 12 years old they've already given up on themselves. I kind of went on a rant about that today in my post.

The best thing I remember about maths in school was how to easily write the multiplication table for 9. Here it is: First write out the multiplications on the left of = : 9X1 = 9X2 = 9X3 = 9X4 = 9X5 = 9X6 = 9X7 = 9X8 = 9X9 = 9X10 = The write down the numbers from 0 to 9 top down on right side of = : 9X1 = 0 9X2 = 1 9X3 = 2 9X4 = 3 9X5 = 4 9X6 = 5 9X7 = 6 9X8 = 7 9X9 = 8 9X10 = 9 Now write in reverse fro 9 to 0 top down or more easily, 0 -9 bottom up: 9X1 = 09 9X2 = 18 9X3 = 27 9X4 = 36 9X5 = 45 9X6 = 54 9X7 = 63 9X8 = 72 9X9 = 81 9X10 = 90 and heavy presto! Multiplication tables for 9 is done. Perfect!

My day has been okay. I have had a headache all day, woke up with that but besides that my day was good. =) I'm sure you are hurting from standing all day. I hope you enjoy your evening and get to relax.

I'm sorry you've had a headache. I hope it's gone away by now. As my way of relaxing I went out front and got some pictures of the full moon with the clouds around it. A couple came out rather nicely.

Kids love that whole scale conversion thing, don't they! Good day here, manuscript back from editor, not too many corrections.

It feels good when you have to look for the red ink instead of having it jump out at you, doesn't it?

It's almost lunch time here and I'm waiting for Vince to get home from his golf morning with his friends. We have a concert coming up on Sunday and I'll have four people staying so there is a fair bit of cleaning going on too.
