Just When It Started Getting Better

Today's classes went much better than yesterday's. The students seemed to enjoy today's lesson on circles. I introduced today's lesson with a Flocabulary video about using pi to calculate the circumference and area of a circle. Flocabulary makes educational rap videos on a variety of subjects. The song for this particular video was rather catchy. Tomorrow my students were going to take a test on Scale, Scale Factor, and Dimensions. Then I got the word that the CTE test some of the students were supposed to take today had been postponed until tomorrow. At first I didn't think this would interfere with my test. At the end of the day an email went out informing us our whole grade level will be spending the morning, until 10 at least. None of us were happy to learn of this. The same thing happened to my 7th grade team last Friday. It threw the whole day off. This time it will be the whole 7th grade in the gym. Won't that be fun, monitoring nearly 200 7th graders with nothing to do for 2+ hours. Hopefully the gym teachers will have some idea of what to do with them. The upshot is, my test is indefinitely postponed. My students will be happy about that. I'm not very happy about it since Friday is the last day of the quarter, it has already been ruled out as a day to give the test because of other activities taking place that day, and now the test, if I give it, will wind up being the first grade of the new quarter instead of the last grade of the current quarter. It is hard to believe this school year is nearly half over. I hope the second half goes more smoothly than the first half. Have you ever had your plans superseded for someone else's task without notice? Do you take such things in stride, or do you get all worked up over it?

I hadn't thought about Math Magic Land in ages. I ought to see if any episodes are on YouTube or elsewhere on line.

I know this would have annoyed me when I was teaching.

Our students need structure and stability at school because so many of them don't have it at home. Things like this tomorrow tend to ruin their whole day.

@DWDavis I worked in a college where they did not wnforce their own mobile phone rules and the kids were just walking over the staff. I seemed to be about the sixth teacher they brought in for my classes. One day I had enough and walked out of the classroom and said "I quit." They talked me into staying. I lasted a term and have never taught again.

@Jackalyn We are still allowed to confiscate their phones if we catch them using it in class. It goes to the Principal and their parent has to come sign for it. The third time their phone gets turned in, they get suspended for a day. Knowing this, some still don't stop.

When I first started Home Schooling my kids the messed up plans would get me flustered but I go with the flow more now. I realize getting worked up over it won't change a thing. For example for today I had lessons set out to do. Well...since my whole house has had a stomach bug all night and day today school work has been changed until tomorrow which will throw off our schedule a bit. Such is life at times...

@DWDavis I have been told I have the patience of a saint. Lol. I do really enjoy teaching but I wasn't a good student myself so I dropped out of college when I got pregnant with my oldest. Ironic, I know.

I cannot imagine what it is like to homeschool over the different grade levels you teach. You must have a deep pool of patience.

This academic year has been very speedy. It's frustrating when you have to change your plans.

My students remarked today how quickly the first half of the year has flown by. They are glad in some ways, but nervous about it in others. Many tell me they look forward to 8th grade, but only if I move up with them.

@Poppylicious It is a scary age for them, and when they grow attached to a teacher they like, it is hard for them to move on.

@DWDavis Awww, bless. How old are they in seventh grade ... twelve? Thirteen? It's a scary age to be!

It would be hard not to be a bit worked up about having your plans all changed. It isn't easy to reschedule these things as you've pointed out.

@DWDavis After our fiasco with the vehicles and the concert, I've been saying the exact same thing. I'm getting too old for all this rubbish.

It's disappointing, but I just take it in stride. Can't do anything about it.

I suppose I should be glad I don't have to teach tomorrow morning, but I'd much rather be in my classroom being constructive than doing nothing in the gym for two hours.

I can imagine how frustrating that is, you have to make lesson plans and then they scrap the schedule

Fortunately, I write my lesson plans on this nice little app I started using last year so making adjustments on the fly is easy, and I don't have to use an eraser to do it.

I'll have to go with the flow as I have no other option. It's go with the flow or go under.

I tend to not like my tasks to get superseded (great word!) - but I don't get too riled. I might say something. Anyway, happy this class was better though that graphic scares me. Ah alas there is a reason I took Philosophy (logician) to fulfill my college math requirement... no good with numbers
