How Do You Find The Area of a Track

I gave my students a one day project today, after our 2-hour wait in the gym. The project was to determine the cost of resurfacing the running track at our local high school. In order to computer the cost the students would have to figure out the area, in square meters that would need to be surfaced. I projected a diagram of a running track on the screen with the either the needed dimensions labeled or information provided to allow them to calculate the needed dimensions. In theory, the project was easy. The students knew all the math they needed to know to complete the project. The challenge was could they bring that knowledge together to answer the question asked. My first three classes tried very hard, and with a minimum of hints and coaching were able to figure out what to do and came tolerably close to the right answer. My last class took one look at the project, decided it was too hard, and, with very few exceptions, didn't even try to work it out. I color-coded the different sections of the diagram for them, along with the relevant measurements. I gave them hints and clues. I even worked out some of the more difficult to determine dimensions for them when it became obvious they weren't going to make an effort without a lot of help. It was not a happy way to end what had been a very good day, even with the ridiculous internment in the gym from eight to ten o'clock. Have you ever had a good day spoiled by something happening at the very end of the day?

It is sad that you walk away feeling like your day is spoiled. You are trying to teach them something to me that seems very simple and they aren't putting in any effort at ll. Your first class did though so I would focus on that and not let the kids who just don't care about anything ruin your day.

@DWDavis Its too bad that the day you wrote this that the students who did good on the assignment were not the last class of the day. I think that could have sent you home feeling good instead of upset. Glad today was better :-)

Today went much better. Though some of the students still tried to act like they had no clue, most of them came around and made a good effort. I left work feeling as though the day had been worthwhile.

Almost everyday! Today wasn't so bad though.

@DWDavis Mine can go sour anytime of the day. I know Thursdays are typically the worst, but yesterday wasn't too bad.

My normal day starts off rocky with my first period class and then gets better. Not today though.

That seems to just be the way life is. You have a good time or a good day that is spoiled by something happening.

There were two pairs in that last class that really tried hard, and a couple more that came around and put in some effort, but most of them just waited for me to go over it at the end. I do find it hard to blame them sometimes. Having Math at the end of the day when they're tired is a real test of their ability to concentrate and think after they're tired from everything else.

Sometimes the best laid plans go awry. With my students, yes, at times.

The way this month has gone I could have used a random word generator to write my lesson plans and things couldn't have been any more chaotic. I was amazed, though, that my students would have preferred taking a math test today to sitting in the gym watching a movie.

It is a shame the class tossed in the towel in that way. It can really negate all the good stuff that went before.

What bothered me most was they gave up before I even finished explaining the project.

I can understand why many of them didn't get it. A large chunk of them shouldn't be in 7th grade math as they're still performing below 5th grade level. I only wish they would sit quietly and let those who want to make the effort work in peace. But their behavior tells the story of why they aren't at grade level. They've behaved like this all through school since kindergarten and gotten away with it.

Damn near everyday. Always happy and perky in the morning only to be one bitter man by the end of the day. Who ever said each day is a new beginning is full of crap. lol

Quite a few times and I have always hated that. Everything just fine until the very end.
