Here it is the 24th of January and I am not caught up yet with these posts about January history. I will try to catch up before I get to the end of the month.
January 17, 1955: The USS Nautilus submarine made its first nuclear-powered test run from Groton, Connecticut.
January 17, 1706: Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston, Massachusetts.
January 17, 1893: Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th president of the U.S. died in Fremont, Ohio. He was 70 years old.
January 17, 1893: The monarchy of Hawaii was overthrown, when a group of businessmen and sugar planters forced Queen Liliuokalani to give up her throne.
January 17, 1991: First day of Operation Desert Storm
What about January 18th?
January 18, 1778: English navigator, Captain James Cook reached the Hawaiian Islands, which he name the “Sandwich Islands.”
January 18, 1788: The first English settlers landed at Botany Bay in Australia to establish a penal colony.
January 18, 1862: John Tyler, the 10th president of the U.S. died in Richmond, VA. He was 71. His grave site is just a few miles from my house.
January 18, 1936: Rudyard Kipling died in Burwash, England
January 18, 1995: The death toll rose in Kobe, Japan following a major earthquake, that took the lives of over 6,000 persons.

Japan has had some terrible earthquakes. When I lived in Okinawa, Japan for 18 months, we felt several tremors. I never felt safe there, what with the tremors and the typhoons. We had two typhoons to deal with when we were there too.

@JudyEv Have there been earthquakes in Australia.? We had one near here a few years ago which was a total surprise to me. But, our house shook and things fell off the shelves in my bedroom. The noise sounded like a freight train coming through the house.

@IreneVincent India got independent in 1947 but that day a democratic government was established and a constitution was finalized to govern the nation
