The Toronto Blue Jays have reached a minor league contract agreement with free agent catcher Jarrod Saltamacchia, 31. Saltamacchia had played the 2016 Major League Baseball season with the Detroit Tigers before his contract expired at the end of the baseball season and the Tigers decided to let him test the free agent market. Saltamacchia has one advantage of being a switch hitter which is rare for catchers who play in the Major Leagues. Blue Jays vice president of baseball operation Ben Cherington has worked with Saltamacchia in the past when Ben was the general manager of the Boston Red Sox. Saltamacchia will be competing against other catchers to serve as the backup catcher to Blue Jays starting catcher Russell Martin in the 2017 Major League Baseball season.

That would be nice to see the Blue Jays win another World Series in the near future.

Salty never became the star as touted and now a journeyman.

You are correct. It is only because he knows Ben Cherington he is being offered a chance to make the Blue Jays team.
