MORNING BEGGAR - Asking for spare money

United States
January 25, 2017 1:49pm CST
This morning - I went to go grab breakfast/brunch at a sandwich spot. It's a higher end sandwich place where you have your sandwiches personally made at the time you order, sort of like a Subway but double the price and better quality. For instances your deli meat, cheese is sliced freshly right in-front of you and not mass produced ready to go. Anyway - outside, there was a man begging for money. Before I got to the door, he asked for spare change so he can buy a sandwich from there. I am pretty shocked, for a person begging - he wants to not eat what he can afford, but something on the pricer side! When I walked out, he asked me for money again then eventually the security at the bank next door asked him to leave because someone must have snitched on him. I think it must be the lady who gave him some money because he kept asking for more. This reminds me when I was a high school teenager, I was stopped by a beggar asking me for $5. Not just change or a spare dollar but $5! I wasn't even working at that time. I wonder if people appreciate spare change nowadays because I occasionally do donate when I have some on me.

@paigea Hungry but picky too -_- Didn't like doesn't mean he couldn't eat unless he was allergic which I doubt.

@infatuatedbby at the bus depot a young guy was asking everyone for money so he could buy a burger. I said I didn't have any money but I could share an apple from my lunch. He didn't like apples.

We have a lot of panhandlers in our city. It is hard to walk more then a few feet without somebody asking for money. If you do give them money then they never forget you. They will even follow you to work and when you come out of work they will be there waiting for you. If you don't give them money they will curse you out and call you names. I don't like walking around uptown for that reason.

That does not sound safe at all. I would not go there unless I had to and would avoid that area.

@Happy2BeMe They do have organizations for these people to use but they don't want help or accept they have a problem.

Maybe he's an upper-class beggar, not just any old beggar wanting change, going to the top and ask for more lol.

The subway is full of beggars lately in my country. I am sorry but I won't give money, I am willing to give them food and clothes though. Some days they probably have more money in their pockets than I have in my wallet. Especially at the end of the month!

You bet! I don't carry cash with me but if I do have spare change, I will give but usually not ones who approach me and keep asking. He was chilling on the chair nicely dressed too.

@besweet I don't see how giving cash helps much either. There are organizations where they would help them but they refuse.

@infatuatedbby Asking for support means accepting that you have a problem. I think most people don't want to accept that in everyday life. Cash doesn't help in my opinion, they are used in the wrong way.

I remember when I was in my elementary years. An old and humped woman would beg at the bus stop from passengers and she would ask for nothing but 25 centavos (this amount is just a drop in the bucket to your dollar). There would be quite a number of people who would oblige generously. Sometimes though, the bus conductors would tease the woman by giving her a peso coin (which is 4 times more than 25 centavos)) and the woman would be mad. Even if you really give her a peso, she would not accept it and insist on asking for only 25 centavos.

I don't give money to panhandlers. Quite often you will see someone standing with a sign near the entrance of our local Walmart/Price Chopper plaza. They ask for help because they have no job, no money, no luck. I have seen people handing money to them, or bags with groceries, sometimes a bag of food from McDonald's. I have also heard of people shouting out to this person information on places that are hiring.

@infatuatedbby there is help for those that are willing to accept it. Unfortunately some fall victim to their addiction and can find no way out.

There are programs and organizations to seek help to get back on the right track. Many choose to not take help or admit they need help. They opt for the easy way out.

we've had a huge problem with that here lately-and yea, they ask for $5 also. i think the spare change days are gone. but the state won't do anything, because the ACLU threatened to sue them on behalf of the beggars..i guess panhandlers have a right to panhandle..

I ignore them. $5 is a lot to 'beg' for, and usually you see them at the connivence. Even if they get $5, what will that do?

I learned long ago that they are usually scam artists, so I do not give them any money. Those who are truly in need are usually too proud to ask you for money.

@infatuatedbby I have seen it myself when I go downtown. Those that I knew were really homeless I saw digging through the trash. I'd try to give them money but they'd pretend they didn't hear or see me. Best way to help them is to actually throw food in the trash when you see them coming..

@katsmeow1213 Those are the ones who don't ask and truly don't want to bother people and seek for food themselves and not hand outs.

The ones who ask, have a thick face. And I think you're right, ones who need the support feel ashamed, or shy, embarrassed to admit they need help.

Yes, some beggar can really be like that, imposing of how much to give them . When a beggar approaches me, I assess him if he is someone who is disabled or very old thus, cannot work anymore so I give alms. But when he is still able looking, I don't give.

@AbbyGreenhill Same here happened. A lady and her kid stood out at the mall asking for money. Many recorded her getting into her Mercedes, driving home to her home. She was brought virtual and now she's no where to be around! I don't trust many too.

@infatuatedbby There are some who hang out at the entrance to WalMart..people have seen them beg then get in a brand new p/u truck and drive away. I guess I just don't trust people.

Some do , and some don't, I had one before begging in front of this take out Chinese place outside, but then I look she is in line behind me ordering a lot of food and had quite bit of money. She asked the man behind her before she paid if he had any change, she was hungry. So i don't understand her asking when she already had funds.

I have given a few times but they have to really be in a pretty bad state for me to hand over any money. Ome fragile little elderly man was going up and down the Motorways asking for a bit of cash. He was terribly thin from lack of food and a lot of Bar owners did not want to let him be in there having a Coffee either. He was really grateful. Those kind of people are pretty much genuine. There is another one he has a van that is better than my Car so I do not give him any at all.

Yes, I am judgmental too. One that looks like they need the money or one that is well dressed. I have seen some with nicer cars and they're asking for money. Or better dressed when asking for money - is a no/no.

@infatuatedbby I try not to judge them rather let my intuition guide me as I have been in very precarious situations myself over which I had no control at that time. When I say judge I let the heart guide me instead of my mind the cover of a book is not always what it seems.

When I travel abroad and back to my country of origin especially, I see many of them begging for money to eat. I would just ask them what they want to eat and go buy it for them. Most of them who are fraud would look upset because they wanted money instead. Others who are really hungry would be happy and would start eating as soon as you walk away from them.

What a classy beggar. Lol. It is sad to see beggars on the streets. It is a visible mark on the injustices of life. But then, i do not give money to beggars, not that i do not have the heart. But giving them money only encourages them to beg and be lazy. Teach a man to fish you know that saying. I would rather give them a little food of what i have.

@sharon6345 I don't know what happen afterwards, but I sure would not give it to that person if I was the lady too. He was not thankful.
