Would You Donate A Kidney?

I just read an article that is trending on Facebook. The Christian singer, Amy Grant's, adult daughter yesterday donated one of her kidney's to her life long best friend who was in need of one. The recovery of her daughter is looking good. That is a major surgery to go through to help someone. I have heard that most of these donation surgeries go well. But, there are the few stories where they did not go well. For instance, I read a sad story a couple of years ago about the guy who was willing to donate his kidney to one of his family members. I think he was donating it to his brother in law (I think I remember that correctly), but something went wrong with the healthy guy donating and he died on the operating table. So, this selfless gift from a healthy person to a sick person has it's risks. Would you do it? I am not sure that I would.

I would for family or a friend and maybe a stranger if I was the last resort

There is a mylotter, a British woman, who has donated a kidney to her husband. I admire her, I do not know if I would be brave enough.

That is admirable. I would not be brave enough to do it either.

@LeaPea2417 I am sure I would be afraid by the idea that I would be in big trouble if the only one I have would stop functioning.

Because I have had surgery to remove kidney stones and the fact that my kidneys were very compromised before the surgery, I would not do it. I am a donor though and if something happens to me my family knows to let them harvest my organs. My nephew is alive today due to having not one but 2 separate surgeries to replace a kidney. I am an advocate for organ donation.

Yes. I am also an organ donor for when I die.

I will be honest, I would only even consider it if it was a last resort option. And I would only consider doing it if it was for one of my kids. Otherwise, I don't think I would be willing to part with one of my kidneys. Sounds kind of selfish of me, but I am a wimp when it comes to things like that. Now, in fairness, I have chosen to be an organ donor when I die, so that hopefully somebody sick or injured can have a second chance at life as a result of having one of my organs.

I agree with you. And, yes, I have chosen to be an organ donor also when I die.

I would. I have considered it but looking into the strict requirements for it I need to lose a lot more weight before they would test me to see if I am a match or do the surgery. I have a friend that needs a kidney and he is dialysis every day for hours at a time since it has gotten worse. I have been losing weight though and if I get to their requirements I am going to get tested to see if I am a match for him.

Well it depends if i am single or living alone yes i will if i am healthy. But in my situation right niw i have two kids and i am living with my elderly parents, even if i am healthy i will not donate it. Cause i need to be healthy and strong with no restriction for my family whim i am taking care of.

My kidneys were affected by a disease I had when I was 7. I couldn't donate one and risk my own. I would do it for my kids only.

I don't think so...I would be afraid something would happen to me that one of mine stops functioning.

It would certainly depend on who needed it, a total stranger probably not, a loved family member would give me pause to consider it.

That's sad news. I would donate my kidney to a family member if I'm eligible for it.
