Pillow Talk

Last night I could not get to sleep. After tossing and turning for a long while eventually I realized that the reason I could not sleep was because my pillow was uncomfortable. It had been squashed into a pillow case that was a little too small. Once I whipped off the pillowcase all was well and I fell asleep.
Pillows and pillowcases used to come in a standard size but no longer. Now they come in King size, Queen size, Euro size and even travel size. Some are wider than others some are longer and some are square! Over the years I have acquired an assortment of pillows and pillow cases and most of them are just a few inches too narrow now - they have not worn out they have just fallen out of fashion.
It is obviously time for me to invest in bigger pillowcases and throw the standard sizes out, either that or tackle the pillows and remove some of the stuffing. Neither actions hold much appeal for me.

I have two down pillows that are not as fluffy as they once were. I have washed and dried them many times. True, I should replace them, but my frugal side won't let me do that. The mess from opening them and taking the contents from one and adding it to the other keeps me from doing it. So, I use them both by placing one on top of the other. Still not a good solution.
I too have bigger pillows than the cases and need to buy a few more. My husband has a larger pillow and I often find it half out of the pillow case. I just keep stuffing it back inside. I'm too cheap to buy anything at this time.

@41CombedaleRoad wouldn't that be lovely if we had time on our hands to do with what we like?

I would prefer to make my own colour coded to match, if I had the time.

@ElusiveButterfly Time on our hands can be quite elusive and doing what we like may not always be the best option anyway! I would probably spend hours making earrings and things with beads, that would be something I would enjoy but probably not so good for my eyes, because the beads are small, or for my circulation as I would be sitting down all day.

@41combedaleroad I've never understood why people make square pillows. They Just aren't right.

@41CombedaleRoad Not long enough for the pillow not to come out. Also I toss and turn and that could be the reason.

@allknowing I have some Swedish pillows, the shape is bad but instead of a fold inside they have ties matching the pillow and they are simply tied up to close the pillow. You could improvise this, it would stop the pillow falling out of the case.

I guess sometimes we do have nights like that. But I have one pillow that I hope I can buy someday.... The big hotdog pillows. I wonder why it is so expensive. I need to buy what is much important later I'll buy it when I got extra cash for it.

I have no idea what a big hotdog pillow is. Are they only found in Philippino shops?

@MarshaMusselman Thank you Marsha. I have seen adverts for large pillows that fit around the body, I suppose that would be rather comforting if there was no-one to cuddle into at night. I have had two hip replacements and I use a pillow between my knees at night, but it is half the size of a normal one.

@41CombedaleRoad Maybe he's talking about what we'd call a body pillow. They are the length of aproximately two normal pillows put end to end. Pregnant women like them and they're good for those that have knee or hip replacements too. I used to own one years ago, but I've no clue why I got it then and what happened to it.

@41CombedaleRoad I like to have clean stuff where I sleep, both my husband and I are allergic to dust, feathers and synthetic fabrics, that makes difficult to choose everything.

My nearest shop by many miles is the market place and they are not always very clear about the size of the pillow cases. But you are right it is better to find a larger one than take the stuffing out of an overstuffed pillow.

@41CombedaleRoad With a larger pillow case you can fold the ends into each other and make them look nice and neat. I learned that little trick in Girl Scouts too many years ago to think about.

Yeah if my pillow isn't right I have trouble sleeping too. I have several on my bed, but there are only one or two that are really good for sleeping.

I often turn my pillow over in the night, or even change to another because sometimes I get neck ache and changing the pillow stops this.

I think the easy way out is to get new pillowcases. However, if you think you'd have the time to remove some stuffing, then up to you. Though it will be better to get new pillowcases and throw or donate the old ones.
I agree with the changes in pillows. I guess overtime, this is because some people prefer bigger pillows than others while some like it smaller so they can take it with them everywhere they go.
Same with my sister, when she sleeps in a different house or room, she makes sure she brings her pillow with her so she can sleep peacefully. Weird but hey, it does the job for her.

Getting a good night's sleep is vital and if you are visiting someone it is often difficult to get to sleep in a strange bed so a familiar pillow is a good idea.

I'm not really into pillows and I could sleep without them at all. But I can't stand not having a blanket or a duvet. I must have them or I would surely have sleepless nights.

The pillow seems not to be a trifle thing.I am very particular about what stuffing a pillow is put in.

I have read that the Queen of England takes her pillow with her when she travels. I would do the same thing if I did not have to fit it into a suitcase that was already pretty full.

@changjiangzhibin89 she is not a young woman remember and she needs to be alert when she is out and about, especially when travelling away from home. I think she deserves her own pillow.

Bigger pillow cases would probably be the easier answer depending on the cost. I have one that's in too small of a case too, but I can still sleep on it. It just looks a bit weird.

Yes..you are right.
An uncomfortable pillow case can really ruin sleep
