Panic attack

I experienced one last night. Hubby works night shifts twice a week and I'm home alone at night. I'm ok most of the time but last night, when I woke up after just a couple of hours sleep, I felt so vulnerable. What if a burglar would come? So I checked and double checked the two doors, tested them to make sure they're locked. I tried to go back to sleep, turned off the bedside lamp but my mind was playing tricks, my heart was racing, I started to sweat, I decided to get up, turn on the light, had a drink of water and decided to read a book till my eyes felt tired. I then went back to sleep but left the light on all night. I slept ok and felt better in the morning. Do you experience a panic attack?

When I was younger, soon after I married, I had the same feeling when I was home alone in the night, no more now.

No, I don't remember being in such situation. When I worry about something, I just pray. That always works for me, It calms my mind and relaxes my body.

Yep. Sometimes I'll be lying in bed and I'll think, "What if I get stuck like this?" or "What if I roll out of bed and land on my head, breaking my neck and ending my life?" and have to watch TV to get it out of my head.

@vickyrose that's another good reason I have for 'watching TV in bed' (which "they say" isn't very healthy)

Yes, distraction is a way of dealing with it, like I read until my eyes feel tired, then i'm ready to sleep then.

Sometimes I start to imagine things in the dark. I think all of us are like that.

I had an older cousin who used to relate scary stories that happen in the dark when I was younger, that's where my fear of the dark started

Maybe the darkness make us imagine more.

@enlightenedpsych2 indeed, we need to discipline our thoughts, structure it more to have happy thoughts.

No, but a friend of mine had them all the time. It was an awful way to live. Perhaps you can see your doctor for help.

I have, I was put on a plan and prescribed meds but always hesitant to take meds, so I used ways to distract myself by reading books or magazines that interest me.

Anxieties can be a challenge as we do something to overcome them.

I did, before going to school during my school times. Same symptoms as yours, plus nausea. I have a hard time falling asleep in the dark. It isn't because I don't feel safe, the dark simply keeps my brain active. Quite frustrating.

Yes, it's really frustrating, it's hard to force the brain to stop and let sleep take over.

I guess all of us experienced some kind of panic attacks once in our lifetime. I've experienced this but not on this kind of situation. Just when I dreamed something horrible. And also, when we were notified that there are rebels in our hometown that have planned to attack in our company and I am the only one in our office that day.
