I know I have posted before about the copy my son gave me, but I was just admiring my collection of copies of "The Stranger" by Albert Camus. I have 6 copies, 5 different printings, not including the one I am giving away tomorrow at my book exchange club that I am hosting.
Each book is different. The translation is a little different, depending on the translator. There are different forewards and translator notes. I even have one in the original text of French, but I can't read it...one day.
I am always on the lookout for new editions. I know there are many! There is one translated in Arabic, which is very fitting, and one is called "The Outsider" for some reason.
I love this book. It changed my life...

That is a great collection. I read The Stranger in high school. I don't remember it and should probably read it again. What do you like about it?

I wish they made kids still read it in high school. Some schools have college kids read it in freshman comp, but my kids only read it because I gave them copies.
I love this book because I both identify with Meursault, yet I feel like he is the complete opposite of me. I am an extrovert and very emotional, yet there are times when I feel like if I don't act a certain way, I will be judged. That isn't fair. I feel like he was unfairly judged based on his emotional responses, and not his actions. My theory is that Meursault probably had a mild form of Autism, like Asperger's, but that was a condition that hadn't been diagnosed yet. My oldest son reminds me of Meursault. He isn't autistic, but he is definitely an introvert. He thinks very rationally and he's very closed off emotionally.

@cpefley oh, now THAT is interesting. I wonder how many characters from classics were based on people with disorders that were not yet understood. Now I DEFINITELY need to reread it!

I read Camus' The Stranger long ago. There was a movie version back in the 60s.
