The Bunnies of Vegas

Yep, I am referring to Las Vegas, Nevada in the U.S. I just had to share this crazy story. If you think Vegas had problems with gambling, crazy tourists and a never ending nightlife you are absolutely right but now they also have problems with bunnies. A couple of years ago in 2015 a Las Vegas resident came home from work to find this teenage daughter sitting on the lawn playing with six bunny rabbits. What was surprising was that these visitors were not your usual dun-colored jackrabbits that live in the Nevada desert but real domestic type bunnies. Being animal lovers they let the rabbits stay and put extra carrots on the grocery list. However these bunnies had plans to become a community and in two month time these people has 24 bunnies living in their shed. At this time I would have started thinking about going into the bunny selling business or at least hiring Bugs Bunny to keep them in order. Anyway the bunnies were rounded up with the help of a local rescue center and brought to the vet to get neutered. The only problem was that some of them were already expecting again. At this time the parks, yards and even lots in Vegas now have thousands of feral rabbits as residents. They have been named “bunny dump sites” and there are legions of volunteers that care for them. It is unfortunate that people who take rabbits in their home find it too difficult to take care of them and then release them in the wild or in this case in Vegas. The greatest tragedy is that these furry creatures are digging up public property, chewing on pipes and usually ending up dead in sewers. A state-run mental health facility in the center west of the city has become home to thousands of furry bunnies. When you first go to see them it appears there are none there. Then if you put out some lettuce and carrots they seem to be coming at you from every which direction. At present the man who first met up with some bunnies has begun an awareness building website Las Vegas Bunnies and through the site concerned citizens know to check up on the bunnies and help to go and feed them. The problem is very real and these bunnies are not planning on leaving Vegas anytime soon. http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/feral-bunnies-are-taking-over-las-vegas

That is terrible about the rabbits. We have a similar problem in Florida with pythons! Viva Las Vegas!

Personally I'd rather have the bunny problem than a python problem @DianneN

That is one I had not heard about. It is funny and sad at the same time. I know a woman who made a living dancing in Vegas shows. I will have to ask her if she knows about the bunnies.

@RasmaSandra Maybe it's a Mecca for rabbits and they're all on a pilgrimage. :)
