I wasn't taught to just give up.

This is about work.
A lot of people here have heard my droning on and on about it. Some (here and on facebook) have told me to just get another job. I'm not that type of person. I'm not a quitter.
That's only part of it, I also am a very anxious type person and so getting another job would only cause me much more anxiety. I'll stick it out where I am, and always hope for the best.
Another one of my co workers has stared to slack off. Meanwhile the guy who was slacking off is now actually doing more work. I guess something was finally said to him about it. He was the same one who used to just sit on the clock and do nothing.
Anyway, this other guy who is starting to slack? Is also doing things that are making people notice. I guess he doesn't see what he does as being harmful, but if nothing else it's annoying.
I won't go into too much detail about all the things he's been doing that have caught the managements attention. I will say that I hope he straightens his act up and doesn't get fired. I know he's frustrated right now, we all are.
We've had a lot of changes going on in our department and we are all having to adjust to it. I'm not getting many hours and so I am the one most frustrated of all. I still come in and give 100% though.
This guy, he's started slowing down, taking his time and then not completely doing everything he's supposed to do anyway. He's leaving earlier as well, wanting to get out of there. Meanwhile, I went in early yesterday and left later then what I was scheduled.
The uppers will see that, maybe not right away but they'll notice. That's what I am counting on. If this guy does get himself fired, then it will just be another advantage for me...
I hope he doesn't get fired though I do hope he straightens up and acts right.

I wish I had that attitude..
I've thus far seen a few people get fired from this job.. most of the ones who have been fired only lasted a few months.
But there's one that I really can't stand. In my personal opinion he's completely useless. I've complained about him before. He's been there 7 years.. He's rude to members and coworkers, he's slow, he complains constantly about everything, he refuses to learn new things, especially anything to do with the computer, huffs everytime he's made to do something he doesn't feel like doing, spends half of his day on gmail talking to his one and only friend in the world, and also his cellphone isn't on silent and will ring while he's taking care of a member!
I mean it's ridiculous, and I get really fed up with putting up with him, and of course I'm the one picking up the slack..
I don't know if what he's doing is being noticed or not.. but I do know my frustrations have been noticed as I had to have a talking to recently about my negativity while at work.
I'm trying harder to keep it in check now.. but I just get so furious at what he gets away with and can't help it!
We had a new kid start about a month ago. He's never done this type of work before, and he's not picking up on it very quickly. He's still really unsure of himself, going really slow, and asking a lot of questions.. which is okay, it's better he do it that way than make some huge mistake..
But he needs practice.. lots of it.
So, those of us that know what we're doing should take a step back and let the new kid get as much practice as he can.. and we only jump in when needed. We have plenty of other tasks we can work on..
But old guy isn't doing that.. he acts like he's competing over who can get more members. He shouts at people as they walk through the door for them to go to him..
So new kid jokes that he'll never catch on because he's not able to get any members. Old guy says to him "No, you have to earn it. They watch your numbers and your volume. You have to work for it"

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, but we rarely get a line. Most days it's pretty darn slow..
But at the same time it takes him so long to do such simple things that when a line does form I take care of like 5 members while he's still working on 1.
Yes I get more work because they know I do it. I am given more responsibilities. They don't trust him with much of anything. They don't bother to correct him because he will flat out act stupid like he doesn't understand. Trying to get him to do something is more work than just doing it yourself... so they give it all to me.
Once or twice I've gone on a bit of a rant about him. I think they know that I'm frustrated with him, and they know why.
He's not manager's pet by any means. I know my immediate supervisor was looking to get rid of him at one point and just kept telling me to document everything and send e-mails of the documentation to all the supervisors..
But then they fired the other girl and it was just me and old guy now for a bit over a year. I think maybe they felt they couldn't fire him then
Maybe once new kid catches on then old guy will get fired??
We're going to be going through a remodel soon and everything will be changing.. and old guy is going to cry like a baby over it all because he can't handle changes at all, so that might stress him out enough to get him to quit.. or something.. IDK.
PS he's not even really old, he's 50ish but acts like he's 80 and claims he doesn't understand technology what so ever, but yet as I said he's on gmail all day and has a cellphone on him that rings all the time... hmm..

@katsmeow1213 Now I think I understand. He's "competing' with the new guy so to speak, because he doesn't want the new guy to be trained up quickly. Methinks he's trying to stall the new guy's progress because he himself (atleast thinks) he could be fired (the old guy).
I don't know, but I always think that these types of people know exactly what they are doing, and play their cards so that they can do the least amount of work and somehow still skid by with their jobs,.
THere's no way to transfer this guy to another location?

See, I would have taken the opportunity to let the uppers know I was so frustrated because I was tired of picking up the other guys slack. I know that's not how the corporate world works. Unfortunately if you do your job and do it well chances are they'll give you more work to do because they know you'll do it.
This "old guy" sounds like he somehow became the "manager's pet". I hate those type the most, they get away with anything and everything and that's not fair to everyone else on the team.
The fact that the "old guy" is shouting across the lobby is just ridiculous. I mean I can see if he says "I'm open over here" In a friendly, yet easy to be heard tone, but well.. Shouting across to get people to come over to him? Stupid.
Don't you guys have those velvet ropes that help form a line so it just ends up being "next in line" please?

I hope things do work out for you, being unhappy at work often spills over into other parts of life.

I think it's going to start getting better. I sure hope so anyway.
I've already been mostly sleeping and waking, doing what I can online and not enjoying life. Such as stress does.

Your work ethic won't go to waste. Good workers eventually are recognized. I admire your determination. It's troubling reading about people who think certain jobs are beneath them yet they spend spend spend knowing they won't have money for their bills. As a result they beg for money for food or other things. It's quite upsetting to see.

Yes, I don't like those type of people. The ones that think that the "lower paying" jobs are beneath them.. or the ones who are at these type jobs and think they are better than everyone else. I hate it.

Everyone seems to think that I am saying moving on to another job is quitting. No, I am referring to "quitting' as being "giving up hope" for this job... I'm not going to quit hoping they'll change. I've seen it before, very little changes...

Getting another job =/= quitting, even if you leave the position you currently have. Sometimes it's necessary for our own personal growth to leave positions that are holding us back and keeping us from realizing our true potential. I totally understand choosing to stick with a position you know, but the easy path isn't always the right one.
You're the only one who can decide what's right for you, though.
One thing I'm wondering is why not bring up the issues with the other employee with management or a supervisor? That's what happens in my store, and it gives them a chance to coach the person and help them improve. Sometimes they just don't care and end up leaving, but for the most part people are willing to make changes.

My assistant manager and I both agree that the guy is getting annoying. He knows and it's been brought to the uppers attention.
Our uppers are a bit different than any I've ever worked with. The upper most management of the store will tell you to "talk to your direct supervisor" even if you already have and nothing is being done about it. He doesn't want to get in the middle of things.
The manager that is directly over my manager was gone for a few months, and now that he's back again things are starting to look in the positive direction.
