While it takes them three hours to hand out a dozen awards (as opposed to giving out 72 in about 2 1/2 hours before the TV show) and hastily add the loss of jazz/pop singing great Al Jarreau to the way, way too long list of people lost since the last Grammy show, I'll go to the next song on my list of favorite "Saturday" songs. The rest of the week will come along soon in another countdown, but limiting it to just ten Saturday songs was hard enough. Here's the next one. #9: Honky Tonk Saturday Night - George Strait I know people are betting on certain songs, so who had Strait? One of country music's biggest and most enduring performers over the past four decades, George Strait has managed to shatter just about every record in chart history. He now has 60 #1 country hits to his name. He was the second person in history to win the CMA "Entertainer of the Year" award after being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame (the first was the only person ahead of him on all-time chart success, Eddy Arnold). And, despite personal tragedy (his daughter was killed in a car wreck at the age of 13), Strait entertained the world a few million times over. He's retired from prolonged tours -- and who can blame him? -- but will be doing an engagement in Vegas later this year. Throughout his long and productive career George Strait managed to keep it country. All these modern kids are probably glad he's not touring anymore, because they don't have to hear, "Hey, you sound more like Bon Jovi than George Strait." And, oh, the great, great music that George Strait has given us. This song was originally released by Becky Hobbs in 1981. Her single flopped, but it wasn't a total loss because Strait covered it on an album. His version wasn't released as a single...but so many good songs aren't. We love ya, George. I always liked George. Like you said, he kept it real. He never did a pop rock song with just the slightest hint of twangy guitar so that it would qualify as "country." Good man.
