Diary Monday 13th February 2017

Preston, England

A dreadful day, and for once, not weather wise at it was actually quite pleasant out today. My problems really started when I queried my council tax bill which has been hiked up severely because of my temporary work over Xmas. The post office lists me as still an employee until January 12th even though my last day on the job was Xmas Eve, in December. I went in querying whether the £90 still owing by 1st of march was excessive only to be told that as they now arbitrarily need to see more documentation from the DWP they are not only not reducing my bill at present but increasing it and I now owe £210 (an increase of £110) by the 1st March, unless paperwork from the DWP (not issued to me until February 28th if then) changes the situation. I found myself talking to an unswerving robotic red tape lover who constantly told me she is not in a position to change things. I will be seeking advice as there is a serious chance this bill could cripple me or even land me in court. I was told they cannot give me any idea how future months council tax will be calculated or set at this time. This was too horrible for words. I had to really calm myself to avoid doing anything really stupid. I did a little shopping to calm my anger and visited a new and very pleasant reasonably priced barber before calling in the library to job seek via their computers. I have some voluntary work tomorrow so I spent the evening preparing for that. Arthur Chappell

I was not aware that employment would have any effect on the council tax rating. Mine did not change in any respect when I retired, which did seem very unfair.

@Asylum they reduce it for the unemployed but because I hat temporary work they are charging me the full rate for the month even though the job's hours were severely reduced and though I finished in December I was still contracted to January 12th so they want the full pay for that too though I never got paid for days unworked - it's sickening

@arthurchappell It seems unfair that the unemployed get a reduction but I pay the full amount. They pay me a pension then take about 7 weeks of it in council tax.

@Asylum the unemployed simply can't afford the full amount - they can't even afford what is taken, absurdly by the very same government that gives them their benefits in the first place - increased council taxation of those on welfare is leading to starvation and desperation for many

This is just so reminiscent of the film we saw recently 'I, Daniel Blake'. There were 'officious officials' there too whose stock answer was basically 'them's the rules'. Sending positive vibes.

@JudyEv I expect so just from summaries and reviews I have read. I have seen other Ken Loach movies too all of which are very powerful angry work

I didn't realise that employment, or lack of, affected Council Tax either. Very frustrating and annoying for you. So much red tape to wade through ... hope it gets sorted soonish.

@Poppylicious yes, the two are very intertwined and complicated wilfully by the tax being expected in advance while the benefits are paid in arrears

It seems a common problem for people trying to get jobs is that you can often end up earning less, due to reductions in benefits, from actually getting one and working full time than you would whilst looking for one. Which is wrong. Even the various tax credits don't always help.
