What do you think of the movie Arrival?

I don't normally watch sci-fi movies but this movie has been nominated for so many awards, I just wonder what the hoopla was about. If you hadn't watched this movie, beware that there might be spoilers here. It started out quite boring but the ending was kinda mind-blowing. I even had arguments with my daughter about our different perceptions of the movie. I guess this is what happens when you dabble in time travel. I just can't quite figure out if the character played by Amy Adams (Dr Louise Banks) travels to the future or did she just see everything in her mind? I said she must have traveled to the future with her present self and that is why she didn't know the private number of the Chinese general and also what she said to him to make him change his mind. It's only when she met him in the future that she was told by the general all the important information that she needed in the present to persuade the general from attacking the aliens. What do you think? What's your interpretation of the scene between Dr Banks and the Chinese general?

I had a discussion about this movie. I like science fiction movie but Arrival seems to have a deeper meaning. I don't really understand it. Actually I plan to watch it again later I think Louise got the ability of predition so that she could see the future. However, I really didn't understand why she didn't want to change some of her life. Such as she knew that her child would die because of a disease. Perhaps she could marry to another man or do something in advance so that her child could avoid it? Or she could choose to be single and therefore she would not suffer the pain to lose a child and her family? It is very upset to know the future with bad news.

@UmiNoor You are right. But perhaps she can try to avoid it? I know everybody will die at the end, but it is better than parents die before their children. Or it will be too painful...

@youless Yes, it's certainly is heartbreaking for parents to bury their children. But I guess for Louise, the times she spends with her daughter more than makes up for the loss. Hence, her decision to still have the child.

Maybe things have changed after she has got to know her future. Surely she would have done whatever she can to prevent the disease from happening since she already knew about it. I think it was the aliens that showed her her future because there was a part where she asked the aliens who that girl was.

Personally for me, this movie was not worth it. I tried watching it and was not impressed. The actual story line made it sound better.

It's based on a short story. I've been told that reading the short story would clarify the movie.

I just saw the DVD version yesterday. I think the alien helped her in seeing the future. Anyway, I think I would have to watch again to get a clearer picture of the story.

This movie demands to be watched repeatedly. I understand that it's based on a short story and by reading the short story can clarify the meaning behind this movie.

Yes, it's kind of a confusing movie. You have to be really focus. It's like when I watched Inception. But Arrival has a less convulated plot.

Arrival challenges our current perception of time as linear and how this perception is dictated by the constraints of language. This is even paralleled by the very language used by the aliens: circular. A sentence, or whatever unit of verbal interaction they have, has no beginning and no end, it is instantaneous. Or you may call it a loop. A culture's language is a reflection of the people's world view and/or consciousness. Thus, the aliens have the ability to connect their consciousness to a future (not travel through time) because their world view affects how they perceive time. What happened between Dr. Banks and Gen. Shang was a glimpse of their "gift" to Dr. Banks. Having learned their language, she was able to connect her consciousness (or establish a time loop) to a future where she already met Gen. Shang.
