They Tried Not Honoring The 20% Discount

Yesterday, I made a reservation at a famous restaurant for a table of eight (8).
So, at 7:00 we were there dining at the private room we reserved.
So, when father-in-law asked for the bill, the waitress asked for the senior citizen cards of my parents-in-law and aunt-in-law, because senior citizens here in the Philippines have 20% discount one dish that they would order in a restaurant.
But she came back saying that it was the decision of the cashier that because we made a reservation, which was downstairs in a private room , since my father-in –law can’t climb the stairs where the main dining room is , the 20% discount cannot be honored anymore.
Thus, brother-in-law went to the cashier and told her that had they known that they won’t be honoring the 20% discount of the senior citizens because of the reservation, then we would have not dined there. He also reiterated that there wasn’t a provision in the Senior Citizen Act that any reservation in a restaurant will make the establishment , not honor the discount.
He also told her that he will pay all the bill without the seniors’ discounts, but he will report this establishment for not honoring it.
Further he said that although applying the 20% discounts would be minimal compared to the overall bill we had, what he would like is at least honor the seniors by giving their due discounts.
The cashier relented and applied the 20% discount on 3 of the dishes ordered, since they were 3 seniors.
Sometimes, we should really be assertive of our rights or privileges.
What about in your place, do seniors have this privilege too?

@garymarsh6 I do know a barber that gives a discount and I enjoy free travel in Greater Manchester, but that is all that I am aware of.

OH Mr I think if you spent a bit more time in the country you would realise that there are lots of places that offer discounts to pensioners. B&Q 10% off on Wednesdays. Some restaurants and barbers have special pensioner days. Rail travel you can save a third off even discounted or free bus travel. I am sure if you go to amusement parks they would give you a discount to go on the scary rides too!

@Asylum I get an even better discount as I cut my own hair or what is left of it. Have done for years when the prices were going up each time but there was less to cut. So I go up and over and from side to side all on a number two grade clipper!

Glad they decided to honor the discount. It never should have been an issue in the first place. Most restaurants and stores here offer a senior discount.

You know what? A manager of a cooperative store in a university here was imprisoned for several months and made to pay thousands in fines and damages. His fault? He did not give senior citizen's discount to a consumer/member who bought a bottle of Sprite on several instances. The consumer/member reported the matter to DTI and filed a case against the manager thus the manager was meted with imprisonment. He was respected and protected by his co-prisoners though in the city hail. I'm not joking and this is true.

Is it I suppose to be DIDN'T, as you said He did give senior citizen's discount, , right ?
See, so it is true indeed that an establishment can be slapped penalty or in this case imprisoned ( I find it so heavy penalty) if they don't honor the discount due to a senior citizen. Though maybe this one was given imprisonment because it was done on several instances.
But I wonder, why that senior citizen just filed a complaint after many instances? Maybe one or two will still be not worth reporting.
I suppose he was imprisoned for just a day or two?

@sunrisefan Oh , that long! I think that served as a hard lesson to him.
But I think the complainant should have talked to him about it first. If he still won't give the discount, then he can file the case.
That caught the manager so surprised. Poor manager.

@SIMPLYD He was imprisoned for several months - I think more or less 6 months. Some of my friends say that the one who reported and filed a case is a usual "trouble maker".

@amitkokiladitya I agree. They thought all seniors are submissive. They just wait when I become a senior citizen- I would be the most aggressive senior citizen there is .

@SIMPLYD I mean some people try to act smart and keep people devoid of their rights..
It is only when you speak aloud they open their eyes and ears to you.

Don't you know rules are meant to be broken.
Sad that you had to fight for your rights. What's going on?

@SIMPLYD But why give up a privilege even if one can afford?

@allknowing Well for those who can afford, they don't have to ask for discounts.
My father doesn't ask discounts from vans when they go to the city, He said it's minimal and he considers it as help to the drivers.

Just got my senior card and I haven't any problems so far. These establishment shouldn't make it hard for elder people to get their discount since the gov't will reimburse through tax rebates. They don't lose anything. To ask an old person to climb up the stairs just to get a discount is unconscionable.

So it's how these discounts are being compensated. Then they really should give the seniors their due discounts.
I hope it isn't that way with our seniors. They can take the elevators in malls if they want to eat in the other floors' restaurants.

@josie_ I do agree that for smaller stores don't honor that. So the seniors should know what stores to patronize.
In the Generics pharmacy, where some medicines of my in-laws would be bought, there are a lot of senior cards forgotten by the seniors .

Yes there are discounts for pensioners here. One large hardware store discounts things on a Wednesday for pensioners, Cheap or free travel on the buses and trains. No cost of medicines once you reach pension age. Some restaurants and hair dressers have pensioners days where they can eat or have their hair cut cheaper.

Wow, it is so nice to be living here because you know that when you become seniors you will be accorded these nice privileges. No cost for medicine too, would be a great help to the pensioners.
How nice that restaurants and even hair dressers have pensioners day where their foods and services respectively are cheaper.

Yes, that is the right thing to do... The seniors should enjoy that privilege...
But what I experienced last Sunday was different. Although the senior citizen has the right for a 20% discount, she should show her ID to avail it at the bus. Her companions were so ungrateful even if the bus conductor had already given her the discount even without the ID. They still wanted not to pay for the kids who are already more than 6 years of age. It's good the bus conductor was calm in dealing with those passengers.

Some senior citizens can indeed be abusive and inconsiderate. They would insist what they think is right when it is not already right.
So, they didn't pay for the kids?
