Where the Buffalo Do Not Roam - Sort of like up there in Buffalo, New York, where the "Buffalo Wings" are those wings of chickens, Buffalo Bayou, the slow-moving, mostly muddy-looking, stream that runs to and through the downtown heart of Houston, Texas, is named, "Buffalo Bayou." Many people hear the name, Buffalo Bayou, and believe that is is so-named due to the proliferation of large Buffalo critters roaming around on its banks. Not so. Back in the olden times, Texans (who were then called "Texians" ) referred to Magnolia trees by the name, "Buffalo Trees." Now, don't ask me why they called them that, but that is what they called them. Because Magnolias (Buffalo Trees) were all along the banks of the bayou, it became known as, you guessed it, "Buffalo Bayou," Largely neglected for many years, Buffalo Bayou has more recently undergone a great deal of beautification. It is now worthy of a look or two by both visitors and residents of Houston, The image above is that of Buffalo Bayou from an old postcard from back in 1908 or thereabouts.

@PatZAnthony - Now then, the next thing to learn is to learn if I am telling the truth of things. (In the instance of Buffalo Bayou, I probably am doing so.) -Gus-

@PatZAnthony - For some people with the right kind of curiosity, something like that would probably be a blessing. For the rest of us, it would likely be a curse. -Gus-

I'm sure it looks lovely now it's been 'beautified'.

@JudyEv - Ms Judy - Most of the bayous I have seen, including this one, are muddy most of the time. The bayou banks are being made presentable, however.I suppose that beautifying a bayou is much like beautifying one of those "billibongs." -Gus-

@JudyEv - Ms Judy - Guessing is the most widely played game in the world, and water flowing in the creek never flows uphill - sort of like regular plumbing at home. -Gus-
